What is a Six Sigma Black Belt?

Ive been searching jobs on the net and under the category business management/consulting there are a bunch of jobs that are looking for a "Six Sigma Black Belt", what is that? There are also "Green Belts" and I wanted to know what those were also.

I did a black belt six sigma course in the uk... deux's link above kind of tells you what you want to know... 6 sigma refers to a method called statistical process control (SPC); specifically it refers to the 6 standard deviations seen within a bell curve - the kind of bell curve that can track non-conformity in manufactured parts coming off a production line.. statistical process control or SPC is the methodology used by all the main manufacturing organisations to track quality and minimize waist.. however black belt training has a wider agenda and looks at things like lean engineering principles i.e. JIT, continuous flow, kanban etc. It also focusses on manufacturing/design efficiency tools like design for manufacture and asembly (DFM/DFA/DFMA) - basically a method of minimising fasteners and unnecessary assembly complexity in manufactured items in order to minimize costs... and it looks at project management tools that aim to better utilize resources and time...

A lot of good quality manufacturing/design degrees will cover these so called '6 sigma' principles e.g. lean, SPC, QFD, DFMA/DFA/DFM (Boothroyd, Suh, et al) etc

6sig is a quality initiative.. Do a search on GE... I got a green belt a long long time ago.. there is training etc.. then you do a project, then you write up a report, then you monitor.. its more or less project mgmt in addition to your regular job.

Ugh, I heard 6 sigma was worse than ISO and I hated the ISO certification!!
