What exactly is "Ethnical Hacking"?

There is a computer course advertising for a certification in ethnical hacking. But it doesn't have the classes or subject study in it.

What exactly is it? Is it worthwhile to learn?

It's a class where a bunch of malcontents gather to learn how to hack, under the false pretense that they will only use it for good.

If you bought 4-5 books, you'd never need a class.

lol @ code.

it is when you break into a site, and then while in you fix the hole.

or you break into the site and then report to the site how you did it and how it can be fixed.

you don't do anything maliscious aside from getting in

That doesn't sound like fun.

The reason I ask was I read in the business section it was a rapidly growing talent that people were looking for certs in. Then I saw an ad, but didn't see exactly what the course study was about.

A guy I went to high school with, name was LD or something, was into that. He was a drop out drug addict, hacked into some DOD site, read a classified laser-guided missle profile, noticed an error in it, emailed the powers that be. He now has a job with the NSA, and was on Good Morning America a couple of years ago.

a lot of times it is dudes that used to do illegal stuff then consult and use the same skills.
you need a good knowledge of how the programs work and coding in general.

nearly all the exploits that I know of on Unix systems are race conditions.

And they teach you all this in just six weeks of class? Doesn't sound to complicated.

No, they teach you the basics. They'll teach you how to do recon and learn more about the targets enviroment. They'll also teach you about common exploits and how they're used. Check out www.foundstone.com. I'm guessing thats who's offering the course.

As for the increase in jobs, don't get your hopes up. Security or not, the market is incredibly slow right now. It takes years to get the right experience. No 5 week course will give you anything more than the ability to make $8/hr as some security operations center lackey.

Wasn't there a movie about this a few years back called, "Sneakers" starring Robert Redford? I believe he had a team of guys that were hired by banks and big corporations to breach their secured networks and then report back to them how they did it. I think that was how the movie went. More drama added to it but that is how it started in the opening scenes.

Sounds like a waste of money

Go out use your money to pickup a unix os, buy some books on Ansi C (unix), samba/ppp/chap/pap/slip/nis/nis+/dns, tcp/ip, html, cisco, firewall-1 etc etc etc

the cost would probably be less and you would probably gain more useful industry required knowledge, depending on how motivated you are.

ed: most of that you can pickup on online tutorials anyway

its way more interesting teaching yourself

Similar. I've only seen a couple minutes of sneakers but from what I remember, he did penetration testing. Usually through social engineering. The classes are designed to either give someone an idea on how a typical pen tester will do thier job or to give an adminstrator the knowledge needed to check his own network to make sure it's secure.
