What exactly are macronutrients?

I read in a post just before, about making sure to take macronutriets for hormonal reasons. What exactly are these, and why are they important? Can cutting and dieting do something to your hormones?

Macronutrients are carbohydrates, protein, and fat.

Dieting (in other words, eating hypocalorically) increases cortisol, and reduces leptin, insulin, and the thyroid hormone levels, the latter three moreso with an absence of carbohydrates in that diet. Any reduction in bodyfat will also cause a reduction in the basic sex hormones - testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. There are more hormonal changes that occur with being hypocaloric versus eucaloric or hypercaloric, and it's all a complicated ballroom dance of biochemicals that I've probably oversimplified... anyone else want to chime in? Like MS? :)
