I need some opinions....Here goes...

So I am at the gym a few nights ago, I ran into this friend of a friend, nice guy. I guess he is training to be a trainer, a few months back he helped me change up my routine, just to give me a variety of exercises to do...Well, he came back from some training seminar, and is telling me that all the training I do is wrong...My mouth dropped to the floor, cuz, I may not look it, but I know how to train..I've been training off/on for about 8 years, anyway. So I started talking to him about EF and how I've been getting alot of advice from you all on this site, he pretty much said to not listen to anyone, and just do what he says. I DIDN'T LIKE THAT...cuz I really trust the advice I get from the ladies at EF.

Then, I told him I was at the end of a Sesamax/Glucorell R/T-rex cycle, he said that all that stuff I buy is BS and I shouldn't buy supplements like that, because it is just a gimmick...

Man I was really floored by how he was just knocking everything I was doing...GIRLS, I am asking your opinions of what I should do, do I listen to this guy, and the only reason I would listen to him, he has an awesome body and seems to know what he's doing, or it could be genetic....Or do I just stick to my hard work and blow him off.

I have been a little lax through the holidays, but not to where I can say I am totally F__ng up my diet...I have been hitting the gym no less than 4 days a week, I usually do 5-6 days, but I have been busy....I guess I feel a little insecure now, and am doubting my self training....

I must say though, I am seeing results, and that makes me feel good. Anyway, just wanted to get some input from you all. :worried:

Let me ask you, do you know where he got his training certificate? Who did he learn his stuff from?

people who did the atkins saw results.. we also have a bersteins diets that shows automatic results.. but they go away as soon as ppl stop doing it

U know what your doign is working for you.

u don't know what he does or how he achieved his goals.
honestly you have to do what you feel comfrtable with but...ur alwasy going to hear conflicting advice.

I would probably let him know that - while it's wonderful that he just got out of his training course - he should probably not advise on product he has no education on or experience with. Not only that, but everyone's result with weight training will vary and you've (we all have) found that EVERY trainer thinks "his or her" way is the "right" way.

Keep doing what you're doing if your getting results. Nobody likes a "know it all"!!! He'll probably learn that quickly!

I've trained w/ a number of different trainers over the years, in addition to my own perusing of magazines, websites like EF, talking w/ friends & just plain experimenting. My trainers have been of the order of:
- strength coach for the seattle mariners
- former Olympic track competitor
- female trainer who trains pros such as dyana cadeau, michelle martine and joanna thomas
- a militantly natural husband & wife tream who have both competed
- the current (former) one who has brought a couple figure girls to the pro level

And I've learned a few things from all of them, but also have tossed a couple concepts from each of them because they either didn't make sense, didnt work or just plain went opposite to the concensus of what I'd heard / learned elsewhere.

Especially if this guy just came back from this seminar- obviously he was either completely sold on their methods or he had doubts about his own or it just plain old made sense to him. But that's his experience. That's fine. But its not yours. I am ALWAYS suspicious of someone who claims their way is the best & only way. I'm like, show me the case studies and surveys that prove that. Especially in the fitness idustry - there is no "one way" to do everything because everyone is completely different and there isnt enough science behind it all to even say that "this is the way it is" w/ complete guarantee. That's why I look at everything I hear - because where there is science, you can consider that, then also talk to a lot of people and look for the commonalities, then maybe try it yourself. But just like stuff on the internet - you have to start by taking it w/ a grain of salt and then weigh the value of the information, check against other sources or just try for yourself. Like w/ lots of "rules of thumb" or "common practices" "- there's probably some truth to part of it and the rest may just be hype or a fall back into generality that can't be quantified. So dig for the part that works for you, jettison the rest. This guy seems to have "found God" (in fitness terms) after this seminar and is now takign it as his personal mission to "convert"' everyone else.

Eh. I'm scared of people who are like that. They are either completely brainwashed, trying to sell you somethign or trying to persuade you that they are the final authority or just trying to make themselves look better to everyone else.

"seminar"

enough said.

A million years out I took the ISSA trainer cert test with Tom Plat (He was very yummy btw and the only worthy thing about the entire class was getting to feel him).

Anyway - the final was an open book test.

You would have to be a complete moron to fail but at the same time it doesn't make you a trainer, you might have a piece of paper that states you are but then again most people have a license that suggests they know how to drive.

Besides, Sassy's right when people are close minded and their way is the only way it's because they've memorized something that becomes THE WAY to do thing because they really don't understand the how and why behind what they have to say.

Eh, he's a friend of a friend.
Be polite when you see him, smile, yes him to death and excuse yourself because you are very short on time.

Then ignore everything that he says to you and do what you want.

What he said to you in ridiculous because there is no set way to do anything because no one responds to diet or training like anyone else all of the time. HELL you won't always respond the same way to things you done in the past. There are only very basic guidlines for diet and training and it take a talented trainer to pick up fastest than you can see in yourself what is working and what is not.

I think it's one thing to share what you know with another person and another thing entirely to tell the other person they're flat out wrong. There's not just one way. What everyone else has said is dead on.

When it comes down to it, it's your call to make. You know your body. You know if your body is responding well to your diet/training. If he's doing something that works well for him, great. You don't have to explain yourself to anyone though if you're doing what you want to do.

The holidays are a tricky time for this sort of lifestyle. It sounds like you're trying though and you're aware that you're not doing everything you usually do. No need to doubt your abilities! If you have a ton of stuff going on right now I don't see an issue with you putting your focus on that for a week or two and then going back to training as usual.

Thank you all...I felt kinda insecure about my plans for diet and exercise after I spoke to him....He really made me feel like shit....I know I am not perfect and by know means do I look like I want to YET...but, I do have a goal and I will achieve it...WITH ALL YOUR HELP....

THANKS AGAIN FOR THE RESPONSES....AS ALWAYS YOU GALS ARE GREAT....STAY COOL!!!!

You might turn it around on him - just because people tell you things doesn't make them true. Ask him what changed his mind because he apparently had different beliefs before he went as well.

He was trying to break it down to me. What I got from his explanation was that he has to retrain me...He was just talking a whole new language, and let me tell you I know gym talk....but, I really couldn't grasp his explanation of why, what I was doing was wrong...

Seriously, I felt like an inch big, after he kinda gave me the rundown of what I was doing wrong. He was talking almost in like scientific terms that I could not relate to...I mean, I am not a brainiac by know means, but I think I am pretty smart little mexican..... :qt:

I have been around gyms for along time, so I know gym talk...When I heard him, I felt like charlie brown listening to his teacher...WAW, WAW, WAW, WAW WAW.... :mix: (JUST A LITTLE JOKE) :laugh2:

If someone can't explain the WHY of what you're doing wrong, then don't let them waste your time.

sometimes the WAW, WAA WAA, WAAWA wastes your precious gym time. ;)

One more little tidbit for you....when someone blatently(sp) comes out and shoves "your way" up your ass and makes you feel like an idiot....it's probably because they need to feel important and belittling people does that for them. He's on a power trip and feels very secure when he makes YOU feel like SHIT..... not my idea of someone I want to listen to.

If you want to stand there and do the Uh huh....Uh huh thing that's up to you. I would just smile and let him know you appreciate his input, but in the future, you'll ask if you have a question.

This sounds familiar!!! Ha! I had people coming up to me and trainers saying they were 'concerned' and I could "come to them if I needed help or to talk" because of the way my body tranformed and how I was always at the gym. "You sure you eat 6 times a day???" Sure do, at least 5 for that matter... I did AM cardio and PM weights, I did HIIT 3 days, abs 2 days then up to 3 ... maybe a day or 2 of moderate light cardio ... I wasn't crazy working out, I was working out SMART, the right way (for me) and everything JUST fell off, literally, esp. with the clean diet.

My old next door neighbor trainer told me it would take a year to take off what I put on during my "down time" and he would help me ... I joined EF, used Shadows Project and changed my life ... the physical transformations was incredible as well as what was going on inside ... and that was at the end of only 4 months ... That guy even called me out in the weightroom in front of his client and others around us and told me "Don't you think you are way too fanatical about your training ?" I told him that is rude and uncalled for because I found what worked for me and it wasn't his plan ... He told me, "It's not rude, you simply cannot take constructive criticism ...." I got my notebook, finished my set and excused myself from the situation ... he has not spoken a normal word to me since.

People find what works for them, I'm sure there's a lot of things out there that 'work' as well as what I did if you give it 110% ... hell even maybe 80% and see results .. but I was not wavering or giving up. I didn't let the opinions of others throw me off (that came later). I agree with what the others ladies have said (as usual) ...

and reading this just gave me the motivation to go to the gym today.

Thanks.
