What do you think of Al Franken's new Radio Talk show?

great post.

I only recently got over my own moral subjectivism.

I'm interested in hearing about it if you are willing to share. I am certain I could learn from it.

Brief narrative. You made a statement few make and I would learn from it. Maybe others would as well.

not really sure how to sum it up.

I was almost a Nihilist for a long time, but I eventully realized that reason must exist simply because it makes sense, and that so much has come from it over our history. I then realized that rights exist because everyone would naturaly have them if there was no government or bully of any kind that would take them away.

I posted this on Deus Ex Machina's thread asking about libertarianism. It brefly describes my current thoughts on morality.

Exactly what do you mean by “pathetically weak moral philosophy?” The only real moral absolute is not to harm the person or property (I think they are one in the same) of others. Many of the “morals” that social conservatives try to push are a complete joke because that unnecessary government intervention is a far greater evil than most of the things that are illegal today.

Ayn Rand was a smart woman and the basic foundation for her philosophy was very solid but some of her more complex interpretations were flawed. David D Friedman (Milton Friedman's son) did a good job of pointing out some of the holes in her logic.

Furthermore, Ayn Rand is hated by many libertarians because she presented herself as a raging bitch that seemed to have assisted that everyone takes every word she wrote as gospel. Her refusal to associate with libertarians was complete bullshit because objectivism REQUIRERS libertarianism even though libertarianism does not require everything that goes into objectivism.

The reason she and a few of her more dogmatic followers give for refusing to assonate with libertarians is that they think the political philosophy can not stand without the metaphysics and epistemology that she worked out. I think this is a mistake because it would likely become easier to spread those ideas after they have at least started to get the government out of the way.

First - "I told you so." www.drudgereport.com (Air America is broke).

Second - Tiervexx - rights don't exist per say, it's that the recognition of or failure to recognize certain rights has consequences. The wages of sin is death (and it's converse) is the only axiom.

Rights are not gifts from any government or from your neigbors. They can ONLY take them away, or you can give them away.

I think the reason that Conservative Talk Show Hosts get so much audience, is because they make people think that it is possible to have a 1950's-esque sociey, with no crime, drugs, where every man works, and women stay home with the kids. Many people like that idea, and flock to the people in whom they feel want to provide it--at least from 12-3PM that is. That is the angle Conservatives work, where in my opinion, Liberals try to tell you how things reallly are, and decide what logical solutions we can provide to solve them.

But where do they *come* from? How do you know they exist?

Example - my keyboard - I know it exists because if it did not exist, this message wouldn't show up when I hit the reply button. I can sense it under my fingers. It works the way it is suppose to work.

If you are on an island by yourself with no storms or dangerous animals that can threaten you who will dispute your ownership of the island? Who will stop you from saying and doing what you want? And if you are there with a lover who is more than willing who will tell either of you that it was wrong for you two to do those things?

If somebody rapes you on that island you will know you were violated won't you?

This is obviously a very primitive example, but you get the idea. The rights are naturly there, it is only a question of who is there to leave you be, or take those rights away.
