job wise.. what do you think it would be like?
im considering trying to get in

just remember it's not all the glory that you see on TV now. Remember your the first to accidents where people are bloody messes, you deal with old people ( who have shit their pants) ALLLLL The Time. Lot's of bullshit like that.

Hours and Hours of Intense BOREDOM with a few Hours of INTENSE DANGER tossed in at a Moments Notice..

Cleaning the Engines
Cleaning the FireHouse and Equip
Sleeping in a Strange bed half dressed and on Edge
Eating someone's cooking that really doesn't want to do it.

Intense adrenalin pumping excitement and Danger
Half ass car wrecks that you have to go to just in case.
Few if any Holidays off
Few if any Weekends off

3 days on duty 24 hours straight
3 days off

where i live the hours are this

In the Adelaide metropolitan area, each shift works two 10 hour DAY shifts (each from 0800hrs to 1800hrs), followed on the next two days by two 14 hour NIGHT shifts (from 1800hrs to 0800hrs the following morning).
The Firefighter then has four days off before starting the cycle again.

i recon thats a lot better than the typical working hours

Both of my brothers are NY firemen. both like my dad and his 2 brothers officers. It takes a strong family, bravery, bood seat and tears. It takes accepting others who you call your brothers to protect and watch your back as they do for you. It takes as mentioned following a yearly set schedule some 24 hour shifts and it takes learning how to save people and knowing what a fire will do at any given time. Yes there are times when they clean, enjoy cooking, and hanging out but its a brotherhood of folks who will risk there lives for someone thye don't know regardless of race, religion, sexual orientation. Its about being a real HERO

I have a lot of respect for firefighters. Who else puts their ass on the line almost every day of their lives, and yet does it for moderate pay? they deserve the praise they've been getting since 9-11.

how much do they get paid?
i thought they got paid quite a bit in australia

flubber, it depends on where you work: Bigger cities on average will usually pay more than smaller cities/towns. Different parts of the country tend to pay their fireman better than others. You'll hear anywhere from 18k-65k for the rank of "firefighter" depending on where you work.
