What do you see your retirement life like?

How is it different abroad for old folks?

they still live with one of their children (most likelly grandchildren too). There is always someone at the house to help them out. They are not going grocerie shopping on their own either. They live a nice life, there is always someone to take them wherever they need to go.

I am terrified of retiring in the States. I dont want to be dumped at a seniors home, I dont want to be left all alone in a house, I dont want to be one of those old people that can hardly drive their car to go to the store and loading their trunk (hardly) and there is nobody to offer help.

I just know what I dont want to happen.

I think in Japan old folks are revered for their wisdom. They aren't treated like 2nd class citizens like many are here.

now I live in Michigan. I moved almost 8 years ago from Macedonia (former Yugoslavia, on the Balkan, in Europe)

I think in Japan old folks are revered for their wisdom. They aren't treated like 2nd class citizens like many are here.

yeap, same in my country too. The kids grow up with grandparents that take them to parks, Zoo, tell them fairy tales, sing them songs. Awsome childhood. I would not want to have lived only with my parents

I'll go back home to Hawaii (Hanalei) by the time I'm 50... (it feels weird to say 50)
but it's where I will retire... spending my days surfing, hanging at the beach with my friends and kids... free diving I want a big piece of land to build a cool Minahasa house on with lots of dogs and a killer herb garden...with trees, tons of avo's, papayas, lilikoi, mango, li chi...mountain apple and apple bananas. I'd also have a nice Boston Whaler (a Dauntless would be fine, but a Conquest would be awsome!!), so I can dive and get to some remote surf spots.

I have wanted one for a long time and the kits are affordable. There is another site that has huge floorplans for studio type houses.... just one big open room with 20ft open beam ceilings, a seperate sleeping area and a kitchen 2000 sq ft. 1 inside and 1 outside shower, just killer... the house has sliding wood glass doors, accordian style along the whole front so you can have it open... I love it.
