What do you minions know about window tinting?

I must have this phenomenon known as window tint. I'm sick of the sun molesting me through my windows while driving in the summer. What do I need to know? Whats this about percentages? I want to block as much sun as possible. I googled but all that told me was that there are a lot of scandalous window tinters out there using cheap shit. Are mobile tinters a bad idea? I'd rather someone just come to my work and do it here. I read a few negs about mobile services though.

I should note that I don't have much choice. The doors and windows in a SC400 are long, and the damn visor is so short it only covers half of the window when turned to the side. Its almost a hazard to drive in the sun.

I think you should start by purchasing a car body.....

Washington
6 inches / 32% Film / 32% Film / 32% Film / 1989

Note : MPV Windows behind the front side doors are exempt.

Enforcement Note : Tint law applies to non-Washington registered vehicles.

And why do I see people with dark rear door windows and lighter front windows? Wouldn't you want them to match?

My back windows are tinted, not my front... I would say mobile would be ok see if you can find some reviews. If not take it into a shop on a weekend, your car they could do quick.

PS, I have a fucking headlight out, someone help me replace it... I think i need to pull my engine to get to the bulb, fucking british car makers.

Now that is ghetto. Do this and you will make your Lexus look like shit. I hate people that do different colors on their cars because the front ones are illegal.

This is pretty true. My car is FUNKY some of the shit it has. You would never see that on a Japanese or American car.

because state laws only dictate how much tint can legally be applied to the side and front glass, (so they can see if anyone is going for a gun or something) but not the back. You can limo tint the back to your heart's content.

I noticed Oregon law is more lenient and I spend probably 60% of my time here. Can I just have it done here in Oregon or do I have to do it based on where I license my car? If I get pulled over I could just claim I bought the car from someone in Oregon awhile back.

Not worth it, 35% is plenty dark bro. You will be able to bust your fleshlight out in traffic with that tint.

Oh I do that anyway. If someone looks in my car thats their problem.

lol!! My ride is clean though nothing ghetto about it.

My tint is dark so that people cannot see in. Hubby worries I will get carjacked if thugs realize it's a woman driving :) We like to pimp, but pimp safe ;)

True, but I like to drive the pimp rides. I love cars :)

35% is for pussies. get 20% all 'round. Just make sure your windows are rolled down when you get pulled over. :D

AAP is correct also. You can spray paint your back windows black if you want, but front passenger compartment windows are supposed to be no darker than 35%. If you went 35% on the front, 20% on the rest it wouldn't look bad.

As for mobile tinting...you really want it done in a clean environment bro. Any speck of dirt gets magnified under tint. Some guy in your driveway, with wind blowing debris around...nah. Go with a reputable place too. You spent $$ on your car, why go cheap on tint?

As for the ghetto factor...maybe my boy Puddles just wants to help protect his investment. Sun and heat can wreak havoc on a car's interior. I know, I know...his geighborhood only gets sun like 50 days a year, and only half of those are hot, but when you're wearing shorts and hopping into a leather seat on a 90 degree day...you'll be thankful for those tinted windows!

I know that if it's too dark you end up in court. Like I did here awhile back. I was told to remove the tint and take pictures to the judge. Instead I went to truck lot and took pics of a similar truck and got out of it for court costs. Fuck 'em. I only got into trouble for driving in a bad part of town in which I won't go there anymore.

Having a moonroof is great for keeping you out of a ticket. It has saved my ass many times. I have yet to receive a ticket for the tint. Now not having the front plate we got two tickets, but both dropped. You just take a picture of it with it on to show the judge and then take it back off. lol

Wait, so 20% is "darker" than 35%?

I don't care about the cost, I was hoping not to waste what little free time I have away from work. Puddle can be a busy boy when he's not stuck in his office.

Investment though? Nah, cars are horrible investments. Very few make you money. Most plummet in value year after year. I'm just fond of this one cause its been so good to me unlike those pieces of shit made here in the US :D

PuddleMonkey said:

Yes. It only lets in 20% of the light vs. 35% (I think that's hot it's rated...been like 20 years since I've done this shit).

I had a place do mine once. They gave me a ride back to work and called me when they were done. I was able to have someone drive me over there to pick it up.

I'm not speaking of a car as an investment you are expecting a monetary return on foolio. But, you paid for this car, you expect it to get you around town, etc. with minimal issues and inconveniences (which is why you bought foreign). Surely, a cracked and fading interior, coupled with leather seats that are so hot your skin melts when you sit on them in your shorty shorts :rainbow: is a major inconvenience to say the least.

damn, you must be pale like a goth kid.

PM, my friend has a lexus like yours. after being tinted at the legal limit here (louisiana), i could tell a definate improvement in comfort. the a/c cooled down and kept the interior comfortable (in spite of the GD leather interior!) and my arm didn't get burned on a 2 hour ride with the sun full on my side of the car.

Sweet! Thats good to hear!

the state of washington (or oregon...whatever) should pay for your tints so other drivers aren't subjected to your face

They need to keep their eyes on the road anyway.

There's nothing sweet about breaking down every 20k miles.
LOL! this only happens on Break MY Windows (BMW, so named beacause their factory sounds systems were so easily removed in the '80's) after the heavily advertised and pushed by the dealer lease period ends. Look Out past 50K!

my last long term car had the windows tinted at the legal limit the second week after i brought it home. 135K and 9 years later, the dark blue cloth interior was still one color---no sun bleaching on the tops of the back seats like so many other non-tinted models.

it's only "ghetto" if u go so dark u have to turn on the dash lights at noon to see the speedometer.

the lighter tints block much of the sun's heat and uv rays just fine. on some cars a lighter tint will enhance the roofline and window symatry (IMO). as it does on your model lexus. :artist:

i just did my entire car 5%...front windows at any percentage are illegal in nj, but i had my eye doctor fax documentation to the dmv that i have hypersensitive eyes to sunlight and glare, etc, and that he recommends full tinting an even windshield tinting...so i should be able to stick it up the cops ass in court with my exemption card...just check ur states laws theyre different everywhere

Will it be worth the hassle of traffic stops etc?

wow, so he wouldn't suggest sun glasses?? that's what i do..

Ok, got my appointment set. Gonna go just slightly illegal, I like the tad bit darker on the 30 vs the 35. Upper end film, not that cheap crap thats gonna bubble.

Everything in moderation bro. I think anything above 40% will look ghetto, and on a white car the percentage drops a good 10 pts due to it being more pronounced. Darker colored cars can get away with a higher percentage since it tends to blend in a bit more. I
m getting 30-40% put onto my car in a couple weeks:

How many headlights does that thing need?

Running lights run with the headlights so it almost looks like their are 4 headlights, the inners just slightly dimmer. It's pretty ridiculous when I turn on my brights, lol.

okay I only read about half the messages.. but heres some important things to consider.

The rear window size shape is Key when looking into tinting. if it is really curved or large an in-experienced or poor quality tinter will make it look horrible. This has to do with the size of the tint they have available and talent they have. The rear window on the SC400 doesn't really curve but its decent size. Some tinters will use 2 seperate sheets of tint... If they suck then you will see a visible line where the tints meet. A good tinter will either use 1 piece, or you will not be able to see the line. So ask for references or pictures of their work.

EDIT: Ask the shop if they plan to use 1 piece or 2 pieces to tint your rear window!!

Also, ask what brand tint they use then go online and look into the tint quality. The last thing you want is to have purple windows in 6 months or a year or even two years from now.

and as stated by another member if you have a "mobile tinter" come to you odds are there will be dirt particles in your tint... and this will be obvious when looking at the tint.

I read about rear windows and I did inquire. Its one piece they'll be using. I asked around and was told by multiple people to use these guys. They are more expensive than other shops, but I guess you get what you pay for.

Good stuff, glad you found a shop with some good references. You do get what you pay for(hopefully) but at least you'll only have to pay for it once instead of paying to have it re-done.

Let us know how it turns out.

How much are they charging you? I just bought a new car and was planning on getting some window tint as well, but never purchased it before.

Depends on size of vehicle, # of windows, and tint quality. I called around to get estimates because I had no idea what to expect and prices ranged from $100-$300.
