What do you look for when hiring a DJ???

My DJ web site is being designed...as soon as I deliver some stuff.

I'm pretty new. I love music and dance..though relegated to watching it these days. Bought really good equipment and have done some small gigs.

Also got some chocolate fountains after finding how popular those can be.

I can handle big gigs with monster amps and speakers and four Shure SM-58 microphones (good ones). Bought a ton of high tech lighting as well.

I need big coins in December. Photography is slow in Denver during the winter.

Mostly just chatting here..though good ideas are appreciated.

ohhh...well dont play YMCA or the chicken dance song.

also, dont be as vocal at the events. nothing lamer than a DJ who talks and is like, "HEY CMON EVERYBODY GET UP!!!"

play good songs, have a good playlist, and just take requests.

trust me, word of mouth will spread amongst the weddings and banquets people.

Meet with him/her and rate their personality. Are they friendly? Will they resonate well with the audience/age grou/tastes? Do they seem understanding and accomodating? References?

Taking requests from everybody backfires miserably. 10 people want 10 types of music.

The chicken dance and the YMCA are always the most popular songs at receptions. Always.

What would I look for? I'd look for a good conservative of course! :P

Now that i've poked fun... to me it seems like the "energy" a DJ can interject into a crowd is more important than his playlist. Getting people out on the floor isn't easy, but a high-energy guy can single a few people out, talk a little trash, and get things rolling.
