Anybody ever tried the Carb Blockers? Normally I don't buy shit from GNC but the other day I was @ their smoothie bar (rockin) and saw a bottle of carb blockers. Now, I assume they are full of shit but thought I would see if anyone has tried them before.

Here is some info I found with the ingredient(s):

Carb blocker diet pills claim that you can lose weight without changing your diet. They work by inhibiting the metabolism of carbohydrates into stored fat. Brand names include CarboLock, Ultra Carb Blocker, Carb Away, Ultimate Carb Phaser 1000, Carb Cutter, Carb Eliminator.

Do these products work? There are no clinical studies performed by the mainstream medical and research communities to suggest that they work in the long-term. Studies done by those selling the product are dubious and only focus on short-term intervals.

The critical ingredient of these products is called phaselous vulgaris, an extract from the northern white kidney bean. The extract interferes with an enzyme in the body called alpha-amylase that breaks down carbohydrates into glucose. Instead of carbohydrates being broken down and turning to fat, the carbs are excreted from the body before they can enter the bloodstream.

Most products claim the tablets reduce between 30 and 45 grams of carbohydrates from entering the body. Whether these products are safe or not is an open question. There are no reliable long term studies concerning carb blockers and the supplement industry is not regulated by the FDA.

Manufacturers of carb inhibitors list side effects such as gastrointestinal distress, heartburn, excessive gas and diarrhea. The main problem with defining the severity of side-effects is what does the individual consider "severe." Personally, I consider anything that alters my body's functions in an unpleasant enough manner to preclude the use of the product. Those listed above clearly fall into that category. With the fact diet pills are notorious for being ineffective unless taken daily, one needs to ask themselves whether they can handle digestive discomfort and diarrhea on a daily basis.

This much can be assumed with diet pills: they are expensive and don't address the basics of sensible weight loss: change of mindset about life, balanced pill-free nutrition and exercise. The real problem with diet pills and supplements is that they have side-effects, which make taking them in the long-term unreasonable. Quit taking the pills and the weight almost always comes back. If any diet pill really worked in the long-term it would be impossible to avoid in our society.

Until they have come up with results from their studies (long and short term) to back this up, I'd rather spend my money on gear
:D :p

Bump for those who have used it! Was it effective???

Peace

They may work or they may not, but here what I say about carb blockers:

Analogy -- say you smoke... say a company comes out with a cigarette that releases less harmful smoke into your lungs..... it really is a bad solution for a problem.....

Good post psychedout, though I'd be careful with the analogy. Carbs in and of themselves are not bad.

Here's my take: IF you are in this game for real, don't put anything into your mouth that you do not wish your body to digest and use - period.
