one must be constantly vigilant about the fact that many women are very flirtacious and go around sending "I want you" signals to guys all over the place.

This is definitely the key point. Many women grow up conditioned into the role of sexual creatures. They flirt (and often manipulate) men, and often it isn't even that intentional, more of a habit.

Because a woman is being flirtatious with you doesn't mean that she has any intention of taking it further. It is simply manipulative or attention seeking behaviour.

Women who know I am gay flirt with me simply because I am a guy. They may even be in long-term stable relationships. They are not flirting with me because they think i'll be turned on, they are flirting with me simply out of habit.
