What do you do when a co-worker.....

isn't doing what they are supposed to do. I'm in that situation and it makes my department look bad which therefore is making me look bad as well. Today, I've done 50% of the work and there are 4 people in my department. One other person has done 45% of the work which means that the remaining 5% was split between two people. We aren't making our goals. I have to work closely with these people so I don't want to piss them off.
 
Tell your boss they aren't pulling thier weight, or if you are the boss fire them and get some new people. Hows the healing process, P?
 
Confront them first on the issue of not carrying their share of the work load. Then see if it gets them to stop dicking around and get to work. If not, then go to your supervisor / manager about the situation.

Agreed.. This is the proper way to deal with it so you are not a Dick and give the person the optin of getting their shit together or get booted out.

The real pain is when Management or HR won't work it..
 
I sit here and read the board all day, then people come by and apologise for interrupting my work and they'll ask me when I'll get something done.
I give a look of thoughtfulness and say, hmmm, probably sometime tomorrow or the next day.
then they come back 2 days later and I still haven't done anything and they ask where it is and I tell them I'm just finishing it up and will have it in by the end of the day.
then I write the code in 2 hours and have it in.

works well so far, so until they catch me and ask me to stop that, I will keep doing this.

I think I'm gonna go write a speech recognition java thingy... I was in a cool meeting this morning about this shit. fun fun fun
 
I think I'll just let my boss figure it out. Our work is quantified using some statistics and the boss has access to all of our numbers. Eventually she'll catch on.
