What did I do?

PHATchik

Studio Gangsta
I had to record an oral presentation for my web site earlier today. NOw, the microphone won't turn off. My recording program isn't even on, but the microphone is still active. I tried unplugging it, but that won't work either. I can't get any other sound to work on my computer. What did I do to it? :worried:

Unplug mike and place in nearest drawer. Problem solved.
You just have no clue how much help you are. See, the microphone is removed from the area (almost out the window, but I restrained myself), but now I still have no sound.

Have you checked to see what the volume control is set on? I know it's obvious, but just double checking. :)

Other than that, I would say rebooting, but you have already done that.

OK here's my final tip before going to the gym, it's a four step program so bear with me.

1) Open the window
2) Unplug all the wires to the computer
3) Pick up the computer and carry it to the window
4) Drop the computer from the window.

When it reaches it final destination I will bet you that it will make a noise.

Maybe I didn't help, but hopefully you smiled. :)

phatchick: do you have just regular computer speakers or is it built into your monitor or something? meaning....did you have to unplug anything else to put the mic on? maybe your regular speakers accidentally came unplugged?

and heres the person who has absolutely no idea what shes talkin about

They are separate. And nope, I didn't have to unplug anything. The speakers are plugged in. I just plugged the mic back in too, and now I can hear myself if I get bored and want to talk into it. Nice huh?

Unplugg the computer for 10 min...............and try again.

yikes....that sucks....i wonder why it won't shut off....maybe for some reason the recording program still thinks it is running? sorry bout' that....sounds annoying.....

have you trieds unplugging like i said? The reason behing it is due to inactivity (no sound) the program might shut off!
But it sure aint if you keep yapping away.

I'm working on somethign, lol. But I uninstalled the program and it had to restart because it said that some parts of it were still being used by the program. I'm assuming that means the mic. So I restarted and the program is gone, but the mic is still active. So to me, it would seem like unplugging it wouldn't work. The program can't be active if it's not on the computer anymore, can it?

you can take a pencil for example and stick it in every hole you can find

not sure if that'll help but you could give it a try

so i take it you tried thevoilume control thing and it failed?? u didnt say

double click on the sound icon in the lower right system tray

If MIC shows up, click on MUTE

if MIC doesn't show up, do this:

When the new window comes up, select OPTIONS - PROPERTIES

On the bottom, there should be a list of audio thingers with checkmarks... click on the MIC one, then hit OK.

Now, you can hit MUTE for your MIC

Yep, that's what I typed out in her Yahoo, but I think she's ignoring us.

Just because I'm finally talking to you on there doesn't mean I'm not keeping tabs on this thread mister.

Guess that means your problem isn't fixed... FOCUS!

START - SETTINGS - CONTROL PANEL

SOUNDS AND AUDIO DEVICES (it might be mutlimedia in 98, can't remember)

be sure that "Place volume icon in taskbar" is checked

(if you click on the AUDIO tab, then vlume under "Sound Recording", it will take you to the normal volume control panel

Somehow, I think she uninstalled the volume controls. How or why, I don't know...we're trying to reinstall it, but she doesn't have a working CD-ROM. This could be good.

I had her try checking the box, and that's where the "no volume program installed" thing came from.

I've worked on computers for 8 years and have never seen someone remove the volume controls.

Who knew...

Just this once, I'll let you two talk about me as if I wasn't here. And damn, quit making me sound so special.

It probably happened during this part:

Self inflicted pain

If she has Kazza or torrent, she can download a 98 iso and then use daemon tools to create a virtual cd on the hard drive.

Daemon tools rocks http://www.daemon-tools.cc/portal/download.php?sid=af99a60c2eda7fde00079f243fe2e699

Oh shit, I missed that part. That's lovely. "The program".

Well, we got volume controls back, deselected the mic, and it's still active.

This could be approaching FUBAR...LOL

Actually, I'm thinking reinstalling said program might replace whatever the hell is fucked...I'm not sure.

She's rebooting now.

Option 2:

Bring up volume panel, OPTIONS - PROPERTIES

Select recording..., then OK

Put check mark in Line-in, CD, or something OTHER THAN MIC.

If that doesn't kill it, it's time to uplug the damn mic

Yeah...we deselected the mic, and it's still active.

Something seems to have usurped the control from Windows.

jnuts said:
Ah.... no.

It's all you :)

Well....hm.

You got any other ideas?

It seems like everything I try is not working. I can't get any other input source to take over for the mic.

I'm tempted to reinstall that goofy program, and see if it will uninstall cleanly the second time.

Yeah, that's what I'd do. Can't hurt at this point.

All I know is that either Taps or PHATchik needs a new avatar...

Yeah, it's lovely...get this...the audio settings won't stay. It's like there's something in the registry that is screwing things up.

Well, I'd say go in the registry and delete all refs to PolderbitS Sound Recorder, but that's not a good idea for her to try.

Try running MSCONFIG and remove all crap that shouldn't be in there - there might be a proggie taking over control of the sound stuff

Yeah, that's what I thought too, so I had her check the Task Manager, and there's not anything peculiar in there...only 11 items.

We're trying Advanced Registry Optimizer now.

Definitely not trying the registry thing...whoo. LOL

Try MSCONFiG too see if anything is running/being loaded that shouldn't be. Sometimes the process won't show up - especially in win98

BTW, how is spatts doing?

Okay, we finally got it...Advanced Registry Optimizer cleaned out 230 orphaned/invalid entries, and now the settings are staying. She's got the input set to line in, the mic muted, and she now has volume.

Spatts is doing quite well...I'll let her know you said hi.

since it is 98 I was gonna suggest a scanreg /restore to see if it was registry related. Looks like it was. Upgrade please :)
