I always loved Mountains. Probably because it was longer and had a bit more development. But even the medium-short ones like the Cats of Ulthar are just brilliantly written.
I think some of his stuff is hard to visualize. Instead of a tangible villian or horror, it's often something completely abstract; something totally non-tangible. Otherworldliness and descriptions of cities build with different geometries just wracks the brain.
LOL, I think his books would make a good study for the verbal GRE's. Diverse vocabulary. His use of an overly descriptive writing style is his main complaint with many critics. I personally love it.
