What are the most essential supplements?

Just the basic essentials.
Right now, I'm only taking protein and a multi-vitamin. Any suggestions, or just stick with what I have. I don't wanna do the creatine thing.

no glutamine! Glutamine shows promise in vitro, but in vivo nothing happens. That's because during the studies they were injecting it directly... when you actually ingest glutamine something like 0% of it actually gets to the bloodsteam. So, unless you want to start shooting glutamine... ;)

I don't mean to jump in and correct harshly... I just think that the supplement industries is one of the most crooked of any, and I don't want to see people waste money.

CasualBB- yeah Ive heard that before, but in my case L-glut has helped w/muscle recovery & repair...not everyone responds the same to suppliments, its just sort of hit & miss...but theres no downside to trying L-glut (except spending the $$$).

haha Seriously though, I havent taken any vitamins in a long time. Maybe I should. I take coral calcium when I get alot of acid or nausea and it works nice, but thats about it. Doesnt work for lifting nausea haha Dont think anything cures that except time

i take a good multi v
whey
gatorade

other things i like:
creatine - cheap, and gives real results
ECA - cuz I like to be wired
melatonin for sleep
ZMA - i like to take before bed on a heavy day of lifting for better sleep
R-ALA
I should be taking glucosamine & chondriton
Flax and fish oil

You need to worry about your diet first, supplements second. Your diet and sleep is what is going to make you grow...PERIOD

If you are going to take Glutamine... take it in the form of G-Plenish.. not trying to sell it, but it is bound to the protein and therefore can get to your muscles. Glutamine taken in raw form.. you'd have to take alot of it in order to see the impact of a little...

Other than that, I'd probably say...

Protein, Amino Acid Blend, R-ALA, Garlic (for my blood pressure), Ginger Root for digestion, a multi-vitamin/mineral supplement -- research say that a drop in body mineral/vitamin stores can result in a 30% or greater deficit in athletic performance.

I also take Gamma-Amino Butyric Acid -- it calms me down... :)

Do you think Ginger root helps that much? I was taking it for a couple months and really couldn't discern a difference. How much are you taking at a time?

I take 1 1000mg gelcap per meal... it has all but gotten rid of my heartburn and digestion problems.

PrimeRib has got it... food first, after you have more high quality food than you can eat, then worry about supps...

True. But you can't possibly get the number of vitamins and minerals you need from food alone. At least not as an athlete or bodybuilder... but I see your point... don't rely on supplements first... :)

if i could get this karma thing to work i would hit you up

eat first, supps to fill gaps

did i mention steak and salad?

Thanks for all the help guys.

Yesterday, I decided that I was going to get serious about lifting/eating/sleeping...no more screwing around...so expect to see more of me on these boards. I'm eating every 3 hours,
5-6 meals per day, sometimes with snacks in between. I'm trying to eat rather clean as well. Though, being at college makes that more difficult than if I was at home. I'm not doing too bad that way. Lots of pasta/grilled chicken.

Currently, I have:
Optimum Protein
Multi-Vitamin
ZMA (thought I'd give it a try...for the sleeping factor)
Vitamin C

I may pick up some:
Flaxseed oil (or do you guys suggest cod liver, or something else?)
Gplenish

Let me know what you think.

FISH OIL CAPS
Borage/Flax oil is also a good combo.
A multi vitamin is good.
Since youre natural, you might as well throw some creatine in there.

college is the perfect place to get your eating under control
good food is cheaper
and i know i'm broke so i can't afford to eat out anyway
there were us 3 throwers on the track team and we would get together to eat, makes it alot easier

looks good, I would scrap the ZMA though.

if your looking for better sleep there has been some pleasant feedback with P-7

also try some creatine, and Gluccorell- as well

best of luck on your goals:)

don't foget the rule of "the other 23"

that is to say most progress in the gym is a result of what you do for the next 23 hours of that day

ZMA _ ___---- aaaaaaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

just take zinc and MG and save a million dollars.

heres what i use
protein (lots, very very cheap for me)
multi.
olive oil
chocolate milk (not a supp, but its soo good)
