What are the "Capabilities" of a SUITCASE NUKE?

Havoc, I read an article on the internet that said that a suitcase nuke has the same destructive power as the Oklahoma City truck bomb. I do not know what kind of damage the nuclear radiation would cause.

If Russia in fact have suitcase nukes, then most probably the Russian mob would have access to them. The Russian mob is probably the most ruthless mob organization out there, without scruples of any kind. I wouldn't doubt it if there is a terrorist blackmarket for these things. Not to mention biological and chemical weapons.

I am becoming more scared by the minute, living in NYC. I am not one to be highly susceptible to paranoia. Eg. the Y2K scare was a laugh to me. But there was no enemy there. There is an enemy now, one that uses all their time and energy to come up with ways to cause devastation.

the yield of a explosive suitcase is small

they showed the projected damage it could cause on london once....it wasnt a lot in terms of explosion, i think the radius was only 500 m (not sure o this it was definately 500 but cant remebr radius) anyhow it didnt take out the whole of london, not that much in fact

the scary part was the fallout. the prevailiong winds would carry the readioactive particulates across london, and that DID take out a large part of london :(

well i hope the feds dont come knocking on my door, but here goes
first the critical mass needed is about the volume of a softball, but that is for the nuke itself, to explode it, you need to surround the ball in external ball of explosives, and this second shell needs to be fired off with compound detenaters, that are wired to a circuit board to fire at the same time, the outer conventional explosive must compress the inner material to start the reaction, if anything goes wrong you might not get complete detonation, but even partial detonation would be impressive. but to fit the whole thing in a suitcase? I dont think so, it would be large, and it would be heavy....how powerfull would the bomb be..... > maybe 200000 sticks of tnt..assume 0ne kiloton?..maybe less, but remember a bomb isnt very effective unless it's force is applied to something... but the technology needed to build this, to polish metal and shit, well if you can find yourself from the feds, good luck, or at least I hope you cant hide from the feds....

I am absolutely no expert, but I would be surprised if a 'suitcase nuke' could take out an entire city. For one thing, the whole reason that they are detonated in the air is because the explosion fans out in a bubble shape, meaning if detonated on the ground a large portion of the energy would be focused in digging a crater.

The term backpack nuke would be a better term, bevause it is unlikely one could carry it as a suitcase withot attracting a LOT of attention. (Imagine walking with a 100 pound suitcase for half a mile).

The yield is generally comparable to 5 or 6 truck-type bombs. It could take down a few buildings but does not approach the devastation of a traditional atomic device.

Such a weapon would be more dangerous if designed to release large amounts of radiation.

My source is one of the US Army's top explosive experts.

they actually showed a omputer simlation of london if a suitcase nuke was detonated in picadilly circus...the radius was 500m explosion wise.

they then did a fallout diagram on the map of london.....not pretty :(
