What are the "Capabilities" of a SUITCASE NUKE?

havoc

Please, if you dont know the answer dont reply, for example dont say something ridiculous like it can take out an entire continent. Usually a nuclear bomb that has the impact of a "Hiroshima" type is in the megaton category and must be dropped from a certain altitude or come from a certain altitude. I'm thinking a suitcase nuke has the capability of demolishing a huge skyscraper or a power plant but I'm not sure, any input would be appreciated, about to do a search myself. peace

A suit case nuke could take out any major city in the U.S.

Supposedly Havoc, there are 10 of the suitcases in the 10 largest cities here in the U.S. I see the possibility very high of this happening. Thet would'nt be hard to hide, and would'nt be hard to smuggle over the border. Right now I do not doubt anything!

Thanks for the replies. Unfortunately I just found this on www.liberzine.com (I think that was the sight) anyway:
Equally unacceptable, though likely tougher to combat, would be an atomic device as nondescript as a Samsonite valise. It could be carried down the street, then nonchalantly deposited at the Plaza Hotel's coat check in Manhattan or nestled in the basement of Chicago's Sears Tower. A few hours later, the Big Apple or the Windy City would resemble Hiroshima or Nagasaki in 1945

This is some scarry ass shit.Ever since last Tuesday I have not been able to sleep good at all.Im not afraid to admit that im scared as shit right now,not only for myself but for my family & friends all over.

scott, listen bro, we're all scared right now, no matter how big or small we are. i actually cried over this and i'm the last person that would cry. you need to realize that there's not a damn thing that either one of us can do about them attacking the US. i don't know of you're a christian, but all i can tell you is to pray. i, personally, am keeping the faith stronger than ever now. he tells us that he won't give us things that we cannot handle, and this is just another roadblock that we have to work through. all of these predictions about suitcase nukes are nothing but rumors to me. in one ear and out the other. just trust in our leaders, pray for them, trust in god and all will be okay. not trying to preach here, but this is the only thing that has gotten me through this. i may be fighting in this war, so it's even more real for me.

I doubt that many suitcase nukes made it into the US. We have sniffers that detect that kind of stuff.

As for what it can take out, I've been told it would not take out an entire city.

Plus if anything like that happened, you can bet the response would put Iraq ,Syria and others into an uninhabited mess of radioactive goo. And we would not just surgically strike, it would be an all out missle attack.

God help us all.

Though I am not totally at peace and not oblivious to the realities,
I sleep good.
Why worry about something you can do nothing about?
Hug you kids or family more than you ever have before.
Get your shit in order regarding your eventual death ASAP.
(We all are going to die sooner or later, hopefully later)
Enjoy life NOW! Buy that harley or car or Toy you have been wanting.
Nothing would surprise me regarding the capabilities of these fanatics.
Just as I am not surprised regarding some terrible things us civilized nations have done as well.

Havoc, I read an article on the internet that said that a suitcase nuke has the same destructive power as the Oklahoma City truck bomb. I do not know what kind of damage the nuclear radiation would cause.

If Russia in fact have suitcase nukes, then most probably the Russian mob would have access to them. The Russian mob is probably the most ruthless mob organization out there, without scruples of any kind. I wouldn't doubt it if there is a terrorist blackmarket for these things. Not to mention biological and chemical weapons.

I am becoming more scared by the minute, living in NYC. I am not one to be highly susceptible to paranoia. Eg. the Y2K scare was a laugh to me. But there was no enemy there. There is an enemy now, one that uses all their time and energy to come up with ways to cause devastation.

the yield of a explosive suitcase is small

they showed the projected damage it could cause on london once....it wasnt a lot in terms of explosion, i think the radius was only 500 m (not sure o this it was definately 500 but cant remebr radius) anyhow it didnt take out the whole of london, not that much in fact

the scary part was the fallout. the prevailiong winds would carry the readioactive particulates across london, and that DID take out a large part of london :(

well i hope the feds dont come knocking on my door, but here goes
first the critical mass needed is about the volume of a softball, but that is for the nuke itself, to explode it, you need to surround the ball in external ball of explosives, and this second shell needs to be fired off with compound detenaters, that are wired to a circuit board to fire at the same time, the outer conventional explosive must compress the inner material to start the reaction, if anything goes wrong you might not get complete detonation, but even partial detonation would be impressive. but to fit the whole thing in a suitcase? I dont think so, it would be large, and it would be heavy....how powerfull would the bomb be..... > maybe 200000 sticks of tnt..assume 0ne kiloton?..maybe less, but remember a bomb isnt very effective unless it's force is applied to something... but the technology needed to build this, to polish metal and shit, well if you can find yourself from the feds, good luck, or at least I hope you cant hide from the feds....

I am absolutely no expert, but I would be surprised if a 'suitcase nuke' could take out an entire city. For one thing, the whole reason that they are detonated in the air is because the explosion fans out in a bubble shape, meaning if detonated on the ground a large portion of the energy would be focused in digging a crater.

The term backpack nuke would be a better term, bevause it is unlikely one could carry it as a suitcase withot attracting a LOT of attention. (Imagine walking with a 100 pound suitcase for half a mile).

The yield is generally comparable to 5 or 6 truck-type bombs. It could take down a few buildings but does not approach the devastation of a traditional atomic device.

Such a weapon would be more dangerous if designed to release large amounts of radiation.

My source is one of the US Army's top explosive experts.

they actually showed a omputer simlation of london if a suitcase nuke was detonated in picadilly circus...the radius was 500m explosion wise.

they then did a fallout diagram on the map of london.....not pretty :(

500m radius is quite a bit, roughly 785,000 square meters.

And my fav quote of them all...
