What are the basic views of fascism?

In theory, communists believe that people are happiest when they are equal, and personal property nonexistent. In theory, modern US-style conservatives believe people are happiest with a government-style moral law and when the market is given leeway to decide economic matters. In theory, modern US-style liberals believe people are happiest when they have basic needs guaranteed for them by Uncle Sam, and when they are guaranteed to not be discriminated against for any reason.

until, oh, around the 1940s or so, "liberal" basically meant "libertarian", i.e. strongly in favor of individual rights and freedom.

Nationalism as we know it today is a fairly recent phenomenon. At the time that Fascism arose, nationlaism was popularized and spreading across Europe and eastern Asia (Russia). It caught fire like Communism only 20 years earlier.

Before the 20th century, it was uncommon to find people identifying themselves with a nationality (as opposed to an ethnic/cultural group). As with any new revolutionary idea, the novelty caused lapses in logic.

You are mistaken because you are only using the Nazi interpretation of fascism. Nazism is a slant on fascism b/c it uses ethnic roots as the primary locus of national identification.

True nationalistic fascism is a modern idea.
