What about Progesterone and Men? Endocrine Question ...

I Told You So ...

Okay, I know about females and progesterone's role in overall endocrine balance but I'm wondering about progesterone and men.

Anybody who says progesterone is "just a female hormone that maintains pregnancy" need not comment, seriously, no offense.

I'm really trying to understand libido/endocrine balance/sex hormone levels without plowing through tons of scientific studies (which I do not have the mind for). I'm especially curious because it seems there are a significant number of men who do cycles, do AIs, and still have screwed up libidos (or are on HRT and have estrogen/testosterone levels within healthy limits and their libido or energy levels are still not where they want them to be).

Basically is there any possibility progesterone plays a role in this situation? I've read a couple of articles that claim that may very well be the situation. If you think about it, natural progesterone (at least topical) is cheap, easily available and legal.

Sorry I dont have any P info handy.

However I would like to comment on your observation I quoted above.

Ive been on TRT for a few years now. It helped a bit with energy, focus, mental clarity and libido BUT there was still room for improvement.

Im going to sound like a broken record here but my opinion on the matter is that low T is not "the problem", its simply a symptom of a much larger problem. The fact that for many men addressing the Low T issue (as you have noted above) does not offer complete resolution to the symptoms would seem to support that opinion.

A simple analogy.....

here is a recipe for a chocolate cake:

2 cups sugar
1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
3/4 cup HERSHEY'S Cocoa
1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1-1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1 teaspoon salt

2 eggs
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
1 cup boiling water

What happens if you make this cake with say 1 and 7/8 cups of sugar instead of 2? You may not even notice a difference but to the keen of taste and texture they may notice something.

What if you only use 1.5 cups of sugar? Now the differences in the finished product will be more noticeable but you should still have a cake to pull out of the oven.

Now what happens if you use .5 cups of sugar?

Our bodies require very specific nutrients to function optimally just like the cake above needs very specific ingredients to turn out optimally delicious.

You start messing with the ingredients, taking them away, its only a matter of time before it becomes noticeable. The more you take away the more noticeable it becomes, the teste degrades and depending on just what you without perhaps its form as well.

Its well documented thyroid function has a direct impact on basically every organ function in the body. Many of the symptoms of hypothyroidism are the same for low T. Give someone with clinically low thyroid levels TRT and whats happens? Depends largely on the individual but generally speaking some symptoms will improve but you certainly cant expect full recovery and why would you? You have simply addressed some symptoms and not what may very well be the underlying problem for low T in the first place.

In terms of fatigue, there are many nutrients in the methylation cycle whose absorption or conversion can be easily influenced. There are also many gene mutations that can affects ones ability to properly convert these nutrients. Sometimes these genetic mutations can totally sidetrack ones methylation cycle leading to things like CFS. Other have genomic alterations that dont prevent the enzymatic process altogether but significantly hamper it. These people simply may not have the endurance, recover and cell differentiation that a normal person would.

At the end of the day, if you have any symptoms you have ever seen a doctor for or anything new that seems out of the ordinary happening with your body its likely tied to your body not having the proper ingredients in the recipe it needs for optimal function day in and day out.

Day in and day out on these very forums we see people oblivious to the fact they arent giving their bodies what they need. They have depression, eczema, digestive issue, auto immune issues, thyroid issues, sleeping issues, cant gain weight, cant lose fat and the list goes on. Yet they continually ignore the obvious and look to performance enhancing drugs and then wonder why they arent getting the same benefit as others from the same cycle?

If you want information regarding progesterone this is a very good site Ray Peat. Progesterone isn't just for women. Also Dr. Lee has written many good articles on progesterone for men.

Simple answers, that don't require profound scientific explanations.

First, in women, estrogen and progesterone work in concert with one another. In men, Progesterone counteracts the effects of Estrogen. Second, Progesterone is a precursor to Testosterone, which means it is produced in testicular tissue.

When Testosterone levels decline, Estrogen levels rise. When Estrogen levels increase, then Progesterone levels fall. Always remember, in men, progesterone combats the negative effects of Estrogen, which are low libido, impotence, Gyno, and muscle loss...
