Netball Australia has warned all women of the new dangers of men using testosterone to sexually excite women in the latest version of a date-rape drug after one of its players tested positive to the steroid.
The player has been suspended from her prestigious job with the Australian Sports Commission and has been banned from playing netball for two years despite a sympathetic hearing from Netball Australia.
The bizarre case centres around a woman in her early 20s who played in the Prime Minister's ACT Cup last month - a second-tier competition - and was randomly selected for a urine drug test by the Australian Sports Drug Agency.
Testers found high levels of testosterone in her sample and the woman claimed she had been the victim of a spiked drink at a nightclub in Kingston, in inner city Canberra, the night before the test.
The board of Netball Australia accepted the player may have been the innocent victim of a spiked drink. According to Netball Australia chief executive Pam Smith, a doctor and the federal police gave evidence to netball's drug tribunal that the steroid andriol was being used in Canberra nightclubs.
``A number of patrons apparently had their drinks spiked and the federal police were brought in and they indicated they think that is what happened here," Smith said.
``It has highlighted that within the community there are people spiking drinks out there with heavy doses of testosterone as a sexual stimulant.
``It is a huge concern for us because we can't have a policy with loopholes, but there is the social issue. We are after drug cheats, not victims of creeps."
Smith said the woman had drunk heavily at the nightclub and couldn't remember the entire evening and was lucky friends ensured she got home safely.
However, sources said the levels of testosterone in her test, recorded in a TE ratio, were in excess of those possible from a spiked drink.
Yeah RIGHT!!!!!!!!!
