welding your own FW implements.

anyone ever make farmer's walk implements? i thought about buying a semi cheap welder from sears and just building them from scratch. most implements online range from 199 and up. if i made 2-3 sets of implements i'd definitely pay for the welder, if i made custom handles for sled dragging etc.

anyone do this?

I have made a couple of things, but only one for lifting and that was a dragging sled. It is the same as what is sold online for 155$ and I made it for 20$. If you know how to weld it is the way to go. If you do not it will take some practice before you will be able to build quality products. The small mig welders Sears sells are good for welding metal up to 1/4 of an inch I believe. If you have not welded before I would stop by a scrap yard or local metal supply and buy some cut-offs or left overs that are close to the thickness of the metal you will be welding.

my dad built mine, but they're fairly easy if you have a welder. he also made my logs, yoke and sled, now for the conan/viking and ill be pretty much set. let me know if ya need any dimensions or steel thickness or anything

i thought about getting a cheap mig welder from sears. they run about 300 or so, and i could build implements, and who knows what else...right?

thanks guys!

damn, i just bought a sled so there goes that. but...i have the "template" now. hehehehe.

Do you have the blueprints of your log?

You can build all kinds of stuff with a mig welder. If you can afford it make sure you buy when that can be adapted to use gas as well as weld gasless. Including the gas will make you welds much cleaner, but starting out without it is ok. I learned with an oxyacetylene rig , and I continue to do most of my welding with it. But, having the tanks around can be a pain in the a#$. A good book to pick up is "Welders Handbook". It covers the basics for all kinds of welding. You might want to read it before you invest any money in the equipment. The book is like 17.95, but I know the tips in that book have saved me atleast 100$ in metal :)
