Welcome back Cliff Lee

Baseballs the one with home runs, right?

Basketball via NBA 2K11 ftw!

Nice headline:Cliff stiffs Yanks! Kind of refreshing to see someone pass up all the money they were offering.

Phillies dream rotation: Lee, Halladay, Oswalt, Hamels

Lucky ass. You've got Mike Vick, It's Always Sunny, Danny DeVito, The Eagles, The Phillies, the nastiest SP combo in baseball in the last 30 years.

In 2 hours or so we may have to turn that dream into reality.

the phillies are gonna be great baring tommy john surgery for one of those guys. Sox got a little better if any. Phillies will be the team to beat in the national league and if Pettite doesn't come back, Sox are the team to beat in the AL. Most sox fans aren't comprehending that they lost two great players to get two great players.

Youk moves to 3rd to take Beltres place, Gonzales takes Youks place.

While Victor was a great bat, he has a terrible arm behind the plate.

Gonzales hit a shit ton of HRs in one of the least hitter friendly parks in baseball. Stat nerds have already said he would've hit 50+ if half his games were in Fenway.

lol@ comparing two guys on the wrong side of 30. One who had a career year (Beltre) and a slow, slow, can't catch, single and doubles hitter with a swing NOT suited for Fenway to two players in their prime who also are gold glovers (although Beltre is a damn good 3rd baseman)
There is no comparison
sorry

From the PROJO

OK, Sox Fan, who would you rather have -- Adrian Beltre and Victor Martinez, or Carl Crawford and Adrian Gonzalez?

Talk about a no-brainer.

Spending like the You Know Who, the Red Sox have gone from having two very good players, in Martinez and Beltre, to having two even better -- and younger -- players in Gonzalez and Crawford.

And don't the Yankees now HAVE to sign Cliff Lee?

Especially considering that their starting rotation isn't as good as Boston's, which ought to be better in 2011 than it was in 2010 because, well, Josh Beckett and John Lackey can't be worse than they were last season.

Can they?

Having missed the playoffs this year, the Sox now have to be considered the favorites to win the A.L. East next year -- in large part because Crawford now plays for them, rather than the defending champion Rays.

If the Yankees lure lefty Lee away from the Rangers, we can debate who's best.

But, in the meantime, there's no arguing that the Sox are a much-improved team.

Yes, Beltre batted .321 last season, with 28 homers and 102 RBI. And Martinez hit .302, with 20 homers and 79 RBI.

But Gonzalez, who's expected to get a 7-year deal worth more than $150 million, hit 31 homers last season for San Diego, where the Padres' Petco Park is hardly a homer hitter's paradise, while batting .298 and driving in 101 runs.

Crawford, who'll reportedly get $142 million over the next seven seasons, hit .307 last year, with 19 homers and 90 RBI.

And then there's his speed. Crawford stole 47 bases last season -- not all of them against the Red Sox, although it may seem that way.

When he stole a career-high 60 in 2009, he had six in one game against Boston.

Crawford has led the league in stolen bases four times, and has been the A.L. leader in triples four times, as well -- including last year, when he had 13.

Combined with a healthy Jacoby Ellsbury, he will give Boston more speed at the top of its lineup than it has ever had.

There's also the possibility the Sox might now trade Ellsbury, perhaps to strengthen their suspect bullpen.

A four-time, All-Star, Crawford also won a Gold Glove award last season for his defensive play in left field for Tampa Bay.

While Beltre and Martinez both will be 32 next season, Gonzales will be only 29, and Crawford won't 30 until August.

um
not

beltre had a career year when he was in seattle and got that monster contract from the dodgers

Sox signed a speed guy for 7 years who is almost 30 and cant hit lefties and will bat in the bottom of the line up

crawford will probably bat out of the #2 spot.

yeah he's a speed guy, but when all you have to do is get on base to move into scoring position that's dangerous with the guys who will hit behind him. he's got some decent pop in his bat as well.. should be good for around 20 HRs.

there's no doubt they overpaid for him, but that's what the market dictated. jason werth screwed everything up by signing that deal so early and driving up everyone elses price.

this has been going on for awhile.

MLB salaries in general are out of control. on par or worse than rookie scale for NFL.

only in the MLB can oliver perez command 3 years and 36 million dollars or derek lowe make $15 million plus a year over 4 years at age 37

I don't agree with it, but MLB players do play almost the entire year. Also gotta figure with 162 games, that's a shit ton of revenue coming it which helps to pay those salaries. The price of a baseball game is on par with just about any other pro sport, yet they have twice as many games as the next longest sport.

I'm surprised he left a lot of money the Yanks had on the table to sign with Philly. My only guess is that he didn't want the pressure of being 'the man', so he signed where he'd be the number-two starter instead.

I guess he really liked Philly and was quite upset when they got rid of him the first time around.

lol, pitching next to C.C. isn't exactly being "the man".

i think he took it personal about yankee fans heckling his wife during the ALCS

crawford
pedroia
gonzales
youk

salty
scutaro

against lefties he might drop a spot pedroia would move up. there is zero chance crawford hits at the bottom of the line up.
