For some it is a staple in their routine when they lift heavy. Others such as myself dont use one at all unless Im doing like a single and maybe sometimes a triple but even then I usually dont. Since I have stopped using the belt I can tell my core has gotten a lot stronger.

There have been some good discussions on this recently on some other forums. (ExRx and Dr.Squat) The belt is an effective aid when working at max effort. For warmup and less than max effort (say less than 90% 1RM) belts may be detrimental to your training goals. For a recreational lifters or body builders, I don't see any good reason to use one. For competitive lifters, it's essential.

I use a belt but for heavy squats and deads or heavy bent over rows.
It's a safety/security factor (maybe just psychological)

If you feel your midsection is reducing the amount of weight you can lift then put on a belt.
Recently I've started using my belt before it's needed in an attempt to keep my waist from expanding. I already have all the abdominal and oblique thickness I need.
