Weight Gloves

New member
I have been lifting for a couple years now without any gloves. I figured it would help my grip strength and toughen my hands up, by not using gloves. Now the weights I am using have gone up a lot and I am thinking I might need gloves. Deadlifts are tough on the hands bare. Does everyone here wear gloves and is there any negative to wearing them?? Also, what is a good brand to get if I decide to. Thanks!!

only thing about gloves is that your hands will get weaker. U'r hands will get use to the gloves and U will become dependent on them.

and when some one says he man you are strong can you pick that up for me you will say " well i will have to have my gloves first" :) but then again maybe you want pretty hands for the ladies..

your hands will get weaker? you mean.. the skin? or.. your grip strength?
damn i just bought a pair of nike "performance training" gloves.

A common mistake with deadlifting is to try to grip the bar in the middle of the hand. When you then go on to pull, the skin will get bunched up and callused. Try to make your initial hold in the same position that the bar tries to shift to as you pull. I have no calluses on my palm.

I don't know what to suggest for calluses on the fingers. I haven't worked that one out yet. Chalk can help since it dries the skin and reduces the tendency for it to rumple.

Wearing gloves puts a barrier between your hand and the bar resulting in a less secure grip. The resulting proprioceptive feedback is likely to result in a lesser lift.

yes skin. and i just dont like to be dependent on any thing.
kinda like a bench shirt.

Hmm, I thought most people wore gloves. Good advise for gripping the bar during deads blut, I will try that out. I was just wondering if I was missing out on something by not using gloves.

My only problem is that I sweat profusely. If I don't wear gloves, my grip gets slick and it's harder for me to grip the bars. Can't use chalk in my gym, it's not allowed. My wife doesn't like the callouses, either. I've still got them, but when I go gloveless for a while, they get way worse.

sometimes when i'm going heavy on deadlifting i use gloves but not all the time. depends on how you feel.

My motto? Do whatever you like and whatever you feel works best for you.

I used to use gloves, hooks, and a belt. I'm not right now (mainly because I keep losing them), but I figure I'll go back to them later in life.

basically i find using gloves on pushing moving great so i use them for that

but for pulling exercises they make the weight slip out for me atleast

straps are better for deadlifts- check out the COC grippers for grip strength or statci holds... gloves have messed up more lifts for me than helped on them.

humm I have big hands i guess i have never had a problem with grip or slipping with or with out gloves acually seems the glove would help..

I just dont like my hands to weeken as far a skin ..
