You are in a strange alternate universe where a. you are very bored and b. the only materials you have available are an 8-liter and a 3-liter container, both unmarked (as in, all you know is that they hold a TOTAL of 8 and 3 liters each but they have no other measurements), and a faucet with running water (and a drain).

Using only these materials, how can you measure exactly 4 liters of water?

*This problem is worth 10 imaginary dollars*
 
Fill up the 8 liter one
Pour 3 of the liters into the small one
you now have 5 liters in the 8 liter container.
dump out the 3 liters
pour 3 liters from the 5 liters into the 3 liter container
you now have two liters in the 5 liter container.
pour those two liters into the 3 liter container
fill the 8 liter container
dump 1 liter from the 8 liter contailer into the remaining 1 liter of the 3 liter container
you now have 7 liters in the 8 liter container
empty the 3 liter container
pour 3 liters from the 8 liter container into the 3 liter container
you now have exactly 4 liters left in the 8 liter container.
 
fill the 3 liter container twice

pour all that in the 8 liter container

fill the 3 liter again, pour into the 8 liter container until it's full

now you're left with 1 liter in the 3 liter container

empty the 8 liter container, pour the 1 liter from the other container in

fill the 3 liter once more, pour it in the 8 liter jug

Take the empty 8 liter
Pour in 3 liters from the smaller bottle (3 in the big)
Pour in 3 liters from the smaller bottle (6 in the big)
fill up the smaller bottle and fill the 8 to the top, but keep the rest (8 in the big, 1 in the little)

dump out the 8liter, and put the 1 liter from the small bottle in the 8 (1 in the big)
fillup the three and add to the 8 liter to make 4

:)

that works too and it a little faster then mine
 
interesting that lestat uses the subtractive approach...

if you have the large container full of 8 liters, you can pour exactly 3 liters out by filling the smaller (3 liter) container full.. that would leave you 5 in one, 3 in the other.

fill the 8 liter one with water. pour it all into the 3 liter container.
that leaves you with 5 liters in one and 3 in the other.
pour out the 3 liters down the drain.
fill it again with the 5 liters you have left.
now you have 2 liters in one, 3 in the other.
pour out the 3 and fill it with the other 2.
now you have an empty 8 liter container, and a 3 liter container holding only 2 liters.

fill the 8 liter container again and pour out enough water into the other container to fill it. that will be 1 liter, leaving you with 7 in one, 3 in the other.
pour out the 3.
fill it again with the the water in the 8 liter bottle.
that will leave you with 4 liters left.
 
Easy. Fill the 3 litre
put the 3 litre in the 8 litre can

repeat

now there is 6 litre in the 8 litre can

fill the 3 litre can again.
poor water from the 3 litre into the 8 until the 8 is full.
now there is 8 in the 8 litre can and 1 in the three litre can

Empty the 8 litre can

put the 1 litre in the 8 litre can.
fill the 3 litre can
add these 3 litres into the 8 litre can

now the big can contains 4 litres of water.

Your're right the first one is still the best. Hanz was a great bad guy. The third is better than number 2.
