Wanting to help out the kiddo

Okay, so when I was younger I took about a year of martial arts. I don't recall that much of it. About 3 weeks ago we enrolled our 7 year old daughter into a Tae Kwon Do class and she is excelling very rapidly. She is currently a yellow belt, but is working with the upper belts every day. I would like to find someplace online that show the different moves and forms in detail, so I can help her out at home as well. She has her eye on the black belt and is determined to get it ASAP. Also, where are some good places to pick up MA gear, i.e. rebreakable boards, training weapons, arm pads, etc? And last but not least, what advice can you guys offer to help her along?

Thanks in advance, and K to you all.

Don't push her for the ASAP part.
Some schools push you for belts and rank and do not bother to teach you real world applications. The best schools focus more on sparring and less on forms "kata". Who cares what color your belt is if you don't know how to practically apply your skills to real world confrontations.

TKD is good for taller kids with long limbs but is lacking in close quarter fighting. I would suggest rounding her out with some Jiu Jitsu classes to supplement the TKD and she will be a better all around fighter.

Good points. Thanks. We are supporting her but definitely not shoving her towards anything. She does have that gleam in her eye for the black belt though. We have told her that it will take a lot of time and effort to get that far. She is tall and lanky, so it sounds like TKD is a good start for her. We will see how she does with this. I am more than open to her trying different styles. I should really join myself. I always wanted to.

honestly im not sure what a yelllow belt is in tkd or what rank..... but i honestly cant see any 7 year old even close to a black belt in anything....... could be wrong tho..... my 14 year old sister is very atheletic and she could be a black betl and anything and id say..... who cares....... one thai kick to anywhere on her body and shes going to break.... id be weary of any dojo that is trying to give a girl under 10 years old a black belt :/

i meant this for the bjj comment.... i dont think a 7 year old can practice bjj... her limbs are too small and she is far to weak to apply any pressure for any holds

Look at the practical history of BJJ in the UFC and PRIDE events. Small, skinny guys can tap out much larger opponents by applying joint locks and leverage. Granted a 7 year old has much growing to do and limited strength but I think it an appropriate age to introduce some of the concepts and start a foundation for later exploration.

Also when these kids get to junior high and high school where most childhood fights take place they will most likely take place with kids of relatively similar size.

A 7 year old can choke out anyone with a properly applied RNC!

I started boxing when I was 7, and I'm mostly o.k. now.

Flat nose and calloused knucks aside, and all.
