wanna dead more

Usually i deadlift once a week (not including SLDL), and do a 5x5. I only started deadlifting 2-3 months ago but i love it. Anyway last week i did 5x5 at 140k. Today i switched it up and did 10-8-6-4-2 at 90-110-130-150-170. I was able to complete the set of 4 at 150 perfectly and even felt like i could have cracked out another one. However, when i got the 170 on i could not pick it up off of the ground and i felt utter defeat and i've been crushed ever since. I am now extremely determined to get my deadlift up, and i was wondering what the best way to do this is, given that i dead once a week. What rep range should i train in, and what other exercises would help my deads?

work on gm's and your dead will go up.. once your gm's are in the 315+ lb range your dl will be over 400+ lbs.

Good Mornings.

Deadlifting even lighter weights is still demanding and still activates your entire central nervous system. That utter sense of defeat your talking about is central nervous system "overload." One of the trainers on the board talked about it, I don't remember the technical term but it's basically like your body AND your brain saying "NO WAY, we're done."

If you stick with rep ranges of 5 you will move up in weights steadily. There's nothing wrong with going for PR occasionally and changing things up but that doesn't necessarily improve your overall strength.

Just be just a bit more patient. A properly done deadlift is a very demanding exercise and 375 lbs. is absolutely respectable after having only done them for three months.

I just pulled a raw 750 on Wednesday, after box squats.

Best things to make your deadlift rise:
Find your weakness
Box Squat with bands
Box Squat with chains
Chain Suspended Good Mornings
Deadlifts with added or reversed bands
Deadlifts with chains
Train the heck out of your weaknesses
Get totally off of your rocker!

Solid gold advice.

how do i determine my weaknesses?
and i don't really know what any of those are . . . bands? chains? whatsup?

whats the advantage to using bands and chains as opposed to just squatting? and does the box serve any purpose other than to confirm that you are going down low enough?

deads are a pull with no eccentric phase, the box squat mimics this. basically you are starting from a dead rest before you begin your deadlift. squating off a box is doing the same thing, you start off from a dead rest sitting on the box and explode up. i didnt find a benfit from the box squats for my deadlift. for me (im tall and i pretty much do a stiff leg deadlift) the gm's helped me the most probably because of that reason.

The box is key...as said in the post above...you learn to squat UP off of the box if you do it correctly. I'll try to post some vids of me doing box squats with bands as well as chains...about mid next week.

The bands and chains really overload the hamstrings and erectors...something that can't be explained till you try it. A couple guys that train with me tried box squats with bands a couple weeks ago and it fried their core. With chains they had some pretty difficult stability issues.

I should have also added in front squats...they have really helped my deadlift recently as I've been doing them lightly 3x a week for more than a month now.

That is an amazing picture in your avatar. Have the original? I used to have it somewhere and lost it years ago.

I got my chains from a shipyard down the street, paid the price of steel for them. Had them cut at about 5' and they are 90 lbs a pair. Got 2 big pair and a 55lb small pair...works great!
