I hate articles like that. What evidence did police recently review? Why are they certain that this dude was the killer? If he was running around falsely confessing to hundreds of murders, why should we believe his death bed confessions weren't lies either? Give me details, dammit!

They asked the dude several questions about the crime/event that he got totally wrong in the past. Including what he did with the rest of the body.

I think it was someone that was going to jail for something anyway and he just decided to go for broke and be famous for something.
