VLC is doing a figure competition!!!!!

The competition is on November 9, which is roughly 15 weeks from today. I had my first meeting with the personal trainer who is guiding me through this today. I found her through my school; she has placed in an NPC Junior National Fitness contest and she does a lot of consulting and routine choreographing for bodybuilding, figure, and fitness. She's charging me a flat $200 for all her advising for the whole precontest thing, which includes her mapping out some meal plans and exercise routines and teaching me how to pose, find a suit, etc.

She measured me at 24.5% bf using 9 points and checking each spot 3 times. She said (and I agree) that most of my fat is concentrated on my lower abs and lower back, that my upper body, legs, and butt are relatively lean. I am meeting with her tommorrow night when she will give me a 2-week diet plan and figure out exactly how I ought to be progressing (how much fat loss per 2 weeks/month/etc). She said that, eyeballing it, I would need to lose about 10-12 lbs of fat. She said the first 7 weeks are going to be focused on keeping my diet very clean and lifting hard. Cardio is to be 3-4x week for 45mins each time, I am to lift 4 days a week pretty intensely, and take 1 day off completely. The 8 weeks following that are going to be more focused on losing body fat although I will still be lifting intensely (just more supersets and circuit training). This is just a rough plan, she will adjust it based on my progress. She's also goin to lift with me atleast twice (back day and legs day) just to be sure that my intensity is where it ought to be and to check that my form is right.

I will post the meal plan tommorrow night when I find out the specifics. She told me that she works more in meal plans than in raw numbers, but that she expects it to be like 30g protein a meal, eating 4x a day about 3 hours apart. So like 120g protein/day, plenty of water, fats only from healthy stuff, no processed foods, bread, or pasta allowed. I don't know what she has in mind as far as carbs go. I prefer to keep it at 200g when trying to lean out. SHe said we'll do some carb cycling closer to the competition and go lower carb then too.

I am so excited!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well it seems that I'm the first one to wish all the best of luck !!!:elephant: ( I have always wanted to use the elephant...)

I wish I had your dedication...:(

Maybe in the Norwegian Championships next year...???

NF

Yeahhhh!!!! I am so excited for you too VLC ;) :)

I am also competing in figure but not till next May. It is exciting thinking about it though. I hope you will keep us posted on your precontest training. You definitely have an advantage - your trainer sounds like she has experience and is willing to help you pretty inexpensively - cool deal!!!:supercool It will help to have someone pushing you when you are getting closer to the competition and your energy drops. At least you'll know you really pushed yourself hard enough to acheive your goals.

Any ideas on the swimsuit? I am already trying to figure out what colors I would look best in. Oh well keeps me motivated

:D

GOOD LUCK!!! and KICK SOME BUTT!!!

Congratulations! Sounds like you're going to learn a LOT. I'm looking forward to regular updates...do keep us posted!

J-Star, as far as the suit goes: I know its going to have to have an underwire! In my head I am envisioning a crushed velvet one piece in lavender.

I will keep you all updated. Thank you so much for the encouragement!

That is so cool VLC! I am jealous - the trainer/consulter sounds awesome to have. I'm sure it'll be very helpful.

I'd like to do a figure comp one day..... have been scared to commit to one though. Keep posting progress info, maybe it'll motivate me to enter one! I would be very interested in your progress!

It's a blast! you will have fun :) oen thought though, if you are paying her for advice and she gives you special instructions, you might ask her if it would be okay to reproduce things such as meal plans that she gives you, she probably would not mind at all, but you never know, she might freak if you gave out her "secret meal plan" :) :) :)

Here's the plan:

Chest & biceps
Legs
Cardio only
Back
Shoulders & triceps

Cardio for 45 mins 3-4x a week.
Atleast one day of total rest.
---------------------------------------
Meal One:
.5 cup oatmeal mixed with protein powder and 1 serving fresh fruit
OR
1 serving brown rice, mushrooms & onions in a 2 egg, 4 egg white omlette

Meal Two:
Tofu & Veggie Stirfry
1 small sweet potato/yam baked, plain (I intend to add some Molly McButter)
OR
1 serving brown rice with black beans and salsa
small sprinkle of nonfat/lowfat cheese

*Myoplex Light shake immediately after lifting, followed by a meal*

Meals Three, Four, Five:
Veggie chili & large salad w/ oil & vinegar
OR
2 veggie burgers (no buns)
OR
2 egg, 4 egg white omlette with veggies

I put this into FitDay.com, and it works out to
168g cho, 134g protein, 26g fat = 1446 kcal

She said I can increase portion size if I feel hungry.
And she said no wheat products.

List of allowed carbs:
Plain oatmeal, sweet potatoes/yams, brown rice, rice/corn tortillas and/or pasta (confused about this because she said pasta should be avoided)

All kinds of fresh fruits & veggies are ok

Allowed proteins:
soy milk (low sugar type)
Tofu
Tempeh
cottage cheese (lowfat/nonfat)
eggs
beans
Powders/Meal Replacements

BUT, she said no to protein bars.

Well, if you weigh 125 or so, I'm guessing, then 12 pounds of fat is only a drop of 9% bf - which will put you at 15% which is not nearly lean enough......

Cornholio, just to reiterate, this is a Figure contest, not fitness. She said that figure is not supposed to be as ripped as fitness, and that they don't like to see striations or each ab muscle poppin out, etc. In her words, fitness is much more like bodybuilding as far as the physique goes. Figure is more like 12-15% bf where as fitness is like 9-12%. I know that figure grew out of fitness but the target physique is different - fitness and figure are not judged by the same criteria, in more ways than just bf%.

That said, I am more concerned with how a given bf% looks on me than the number itself. If 15% doesn't look lean enough then I will definitely cut down further. I have 15 weeks to accomplish this in, and I will not go up on stage and embarass myself by not looking lean enough. I suspect that I'm going to look pretty lean at 15% because of the way I carry bodyfat.

Of course, this is my first figure contest, and I am going largely by the physiques I see in magazines and by of course what the trainer (who I am paying) tells me. If anyone here has experience doing figure or is familiar with how it is judged then I would love to hear about it.

There is a big thread on this, it's what the judges want, around here lately, they want the figure girls to look just like the fitness girls, but without a routine, go one state over and they want the figure girls to be about 1%-2% "fatter" than the fitness girls, meaning, you eat a little more carbs before you go on stage :) Be sure to go to a few figure shows, because the girls are almost ripped :) You are going to have a blast getting there, I took first place in my fitness show and the best part was getting there, the show wasn't that much fun :) :) :)

VLC - there is a lady at my aerobics instructor bulletin board who did a figure comp. There are pics of her at the comp (on stage with the other competitors) if you want to access that site. - e-mail me for details. I'm pretty sure she won.

I just called the contest promoter, who is not judging this contest but judges all the major ones in the state. He was really cool, said he would help with whatever I needed since it will be my first contest. He said figure is fitness without the routine. So, I guess I'll be getting leaner than I thought? Hope I have enough muscle...

My first contest I bulked up from 123 to 150 pounds for 8 months to get some muscle, then leaned down from 150 to 112 pounds in 4 months, I'm 5'4" and carrying a good amount of muscle, you will surely have to get into the 100 teens to compete, don't worry, it's not that rough, you will make it :) Right now I am weighing 151.2 pounds because I needed more muscle for the nationals, but I started back leaning down for my contest in 14 weeks, I started monday. And on the water thing, I was drinking 2 1/2 gallons of water every day, that helped out a lot :)

VLC - Figure Comps are a lot leaner than most people think. Which is why I have been so hesitant to enter one! I've seen one Figure comp (NPC) and was surprised at how lean most the girls were. There were a couple "strippers with muscles" but most looked like Fitness competitors.

Good idea on calling the Promoter. That's great that he will help guide you through it.

Good luck again, I know you'll do great! :D Don't forget updates!

lol. Well, I'm glad to hear I'm not the only who "bulked up" after my show. I also just started dieting again for the next one. At least there's less actual fat to take off this time.

Good luck VLC. Just stay focussed. You'll be great.

Doll - 16% ain't gonna cut it in a figure comp - do a search on goodle and look at some of the piccs....

I'm going to have to have a talk with my trainer ASAP about this. I think she's under the impression that I need to be 16% when it sounds like I need to be more like 10-12%. I counted, I have 14 weeks. I'm very glad you all set me straight on what they're looking for. It would have been so disappointing to find this all out 14 weeks from now.

did she explain why "no protein bars" in your meal plan? ... some only have 4grams of sugar ... just wondering

good luck

DaisyGirl,

What do you mean by "strippers with muscle"?? Do you mean they had high bodyfat?

When Figure comp's fist started, most of the participants were girls with big boobs and naturally lean - looked like strippers with a little muscle, or lean bikini models. Good bodies, but definately not cut or very muscular.

As Figure has "grown" (as much as it can in just a couple years), it has become more like a Fitness Comp w/o the routine than a bikini contest where the girl with the boobs and natural muscle wins.

So compared to the general population, they were lean, but when compared to Fitness/BB competitors they did have higher BF (less muscle).

VLC - pm me if I can help with a routine/diet - I just stripped 28 pounds in 12 weeks

Also remember, if you want to get some good suits, it takes about 3 months to get them, so you should order now. :)

I spoke to my trainer today. I had called her earlier and left a message telling her about what the contest promoter had said and what I had been hearing. She spoke to a colleage who has been judging fitness as well as figure in some regional (multi-state) competitions and then called me today and told me that the look isn't the same as fitness. But this time she elaborated a bit further.

What she has in mind is the fitness look without the AAS and "without the striations". Examples: The cover of Muscle-Fitness Hers magazine. Rachel McGlish (her example). Monica Brant.

Cool thing I found out today: She competed with Mandy Blank and Kelly Ryan at the national level. And disheartening thing I found out today: Many of the national level fitness competitors, if not most, use AAS. I'm not against AAS use in general, but it seems like an unfair advantage against those who are natural. It sucks because I feel like I can't realistically aspire to their physiques without "help." Really disheartening case in point: Mandy Blank. (Madame Trainer believes this based largely on the fact that she gained 20 lbs of muscle within a year as soon as she started training with Debbie Kruck).

I would like to add that she agrees that I need to be a lower bf % than 16 after talking with the colleague that judges.

Also:

I tried the links Spatts posted but none of them have underwires. :( I have big boobs. And big boob related issues (ie: saggin) so there is no way a triangle top will do. I'm gonna get a boob job as soon as the competition is done to fix these issues...but right now...I need some more options. Anyone know of people who make custom suits?

vlc - glad to hear that you and the trainer are now on the same page......

my .02 - totally unsolicited of course - check on her references....imo 95% of trainers should know that 15% bf or higher will not work even in a figure comp...

She is still VERY lean (MUCH leaner than 16%) though and that is the main point to your post I thought....

I'm meeting with my trainer tommorrow afternoon so I'll post the bf% measurements as soon as I find it out.

I've been eating around 1800 kcal (sometimes a lil more, sometimes a lil less). Managed to get the diet down now, I actually like it. That's probably because we haven't gotten to the hardcore cutting stuff yet, LOL. Been lifting really heavy and hard.

I already see a big improvement in amt of muscle. I gained 3 #. I can see some more muscle on my chest and shoulders, gained strength on my squats, my triceps are visible when i flex, my abs look better too. I measured; I lost .5 inch off my waist so far. Its only been 10 days on the diet/exercise program and only in the past few days have I really nailed the diet and made it completely clean. I'm really excited because I'm seeing improvements already!

This is a sample of how I've been eating (YUM):

Meal One:

1 scoop vanilla Grow! protein powder (20g whey protein, 2g carbs)
.25 cup frozen blueberries & .25 cup frozen strawberries
1 medium banana [all blended into a delicious shake]
.5 cup old fashioned oats

OR

1 scoop vanilla Grow!, .5 cup oats cooked, 1 large egg, .25 cup soy milk to create a protein pancake that is delicious
eaten with sugar-free syrup and molly mcbutter

Meal Two:

.5 cup black beans
.5 cup rice
.25 cup salsa
2 slices veggie cheese
.25 cup tofu flavored like beef

OR

the prepackaged veggie chili

*Lift & cardio after*

---Myoplex Light Shake---

Meal Four:

raw spinach with 1 tbsp Udo's & 1 tbsp vinegar
nonfat yogurt
1 "Better Burger" (veggie burger) with some ketchup

Meal Five:

1 cup nonfat cottage cheese

One bit of advice, while you get ready for a show..dont drive yourself crazy looking at pics of other competitors and how lean they are or whatever..I can tell you from experience you will go mad...You just have to bring your body in how you feel is at YOUR best..how do u feel comfortable on the stage...i had several people tell me on my very first show i was too lean for figure etc...scaring me...and i ended up winning the show..I usually come in around 9-10%...but those are numbers..the judges dont ask you bodyfat on stage...they are looking for a look...a body that is in good condition and how you present it...PRESENTATION is EVERYTHING...ive seen a lot of girls that could have done a lot better but their presentation sucks..so spend just as much time practicing that as u do getting your body ready. Look at yourself in the mirror...let that be the judge..you will get 100 opinions as u get ready for a show...everyone will know everything..stick to only a few people and listen to them..write everything down so in the future u can look back and see...if it did work u can do it again..if it doesnt work..where can u make changes?? It takes practice and experience..take your time and have fun...

Hey guys, just thought I'd give a little update on my progress. I got my bf% measured today, about 2 weeks into the precontest stuff. I'm down 3% and I gained 2 # of lean mass!!! I'm at 21.5% today (August 14) , I was 24.5% on August 2.

A point I would add to New's suggestions -- don't get too hung up on seeing what all the "winners" look like -- sometimes you have to work w/ the body that God gave you -- I'm certainly not the perfect ectomorph -- I've got a nice big ol' butt & good German breeding hips, however I'm pretty happy w/ my back, arms, shoulders and calves. So on your first time out, learn what diet & training your body responds to, identify your lagging & strong parts & see what you can do to improve the lagging parts -- or what you can to create the illusion that your lagging parts dont' lag that much.

And then presentation! See what New@ said. It usually takes a few competitions to get the hang of what really works for you, and don't feel bad about yourself if you don't have exactly the same look as whoever won the NPC whatever show. And just have fun with it! That attitude will show on stage!

HOw many other forums to get to walk around in a $200 swimsuit in big ol' fuck me shoes for an audience of screaming people???

Sassy & FitBitch:

About the presentation, posing, etc...are there any videos you would reccommend? Books? I am going to attend a few shows before mine to get a better idea of what to do, but if you have any ideas please share them. I would practice right away if I knew what that meant.

You need to find a fitness/figure competitor in your area and have them show you and work with u...that is probably the best way to go about it..Start asking around..go to shows and get to know people.
