What is some good software and add ons? I'd like to capture my 8mm videoes to a CD. Any suggestions?

Would I be better off buying a Digital Video Camera for future home movies?

Well, I used an ATI All-in-Wonder for my analog video capture, and it works pretty well, but ATI stuff sometimes has driver issues.

I would definitely suggest a DV camera for future movies. MUCH better technology. Pinnacle sells a software/FireWire bundle for about $100 that I like. Easy to use, and seems to be stable.

Also, there's a Hollywood DV bridge that sells for about $300 that would allow you to capture analog video via your FireWire ports. It's on my wish list of toys.

I was looking at the Dazzle periph. I've heard it works pretty good and at a good price.

Any DV camera suggestions?

I've heard Dazzle is just okay. I've talked to people who have said it's finicky, and that the quality isn't as good as they'd like after they've used it for a while. Personally, I've never tried it, so don't take my word as gospel.

I've got a JVC DV camcorder, and I love it. The only thing I would maybe do differently is buy a higher-end model that would let me do analog input. I think some of the higher end models will allow you to do capture to FireWire through the camcorder, which would eliminate the need for the Hollywood DV bridge.

I looked at Sony too, but there was something that turned me away from them. Seems like they use a different DV format than everyone else, but I don't remember.

I have Dazzle. Have had it for a few years. It's great for converting analog into digital. Quality is good also. Not too much editing with their software however. You can add text, cut&merge and stuff, but that's about the extent of it.

The only problem I've had is exporting from computer to television thru dazzle. It doesn't work well at all. (Of course if your computer has a TV out video card, you need no worry about it)

sony uses 3 formats in digital quality, digital 8, mini dv, and micro mv, the difference

is digital 8-- 480 line sof quality but its bigger, same size as a regular 8mm

mini dv- very small, digital quality (480), carl zeis lenses...

micro mv-- very very small, mpeg 2 (this is the downsize, is less quality then mini dv, and the camera is alot more expensive
