Yes it is here for some and it should be for all! Everything should be closed like it used to be in my province and the vets honoured and celebrated.

Once these old timers pass on the younguns will forget the price paid for the cushy lifestyle we live today.

My friends parents had it right, when she wanted to watch tv on this day her parents said she could but it had to be Remembrance Day stuff. They wanted her to learn what this day was for.

I was at work. All government jobs had the day off.

If it is a holiday, people will "remember" nov 11 juat as a holly day and forget what's behind

they'll be more preoccupied by what they can do

while if it a working day and you observe a minute's silence at 11 am, you don't forget the meaning of this date

I disagree .... I was working @ 11 this morning we didn't pause to observe the minute. If I was off I would probably go to the cermoniess at Queens Park.

It was only a short while ago, that all stores and schools were closed for Remembrance day(schools are still closed on this day). The only thing open were convenience stores, and all they could sell were the essentials (milk, bread etc.)

I don't think it should be.

It commemorates the armistace of November 11th, 1918 that ended WWI. The main reason for the armistace on that day was that in the preceeding weeks chemical and biotoxins had been introduced on the battle fields. These areas of Europe were littered with corpses because the field hospitals were being taken down as well and it turned these areas into giant open graves of partially destoryed corpses.

That's not technically true - chlorine was used as far back as Ypres 1915...Hitler himself was injured from a chlorine attack. The truth is that the introduction of chemical agents into warfare dramatically increased the chances of survival for both sides - before it was used the ratio of casualty to death rate was 3 to 1 , after chlorine it became 13 to 1 and after sarin it shot up to over 100 to 1. The whole purpose was not to kill but to shred the enemy's resources in that they would be forced to exhaust themselves tending to their wounded.

whether it is a holiday or not is a moot point
in the states, where i lived for 26 years, it was a holiday and there were big parades and ceremonies
here in ontario it is a screwed up mess where businesses other than essentials are open til 12
what's the use
either give it all off or not
don't inconvenience us
at 11 there was a moment of silence
i was at work and the radio was silent for a minute
to me it is senseless as a holiday it is just seen as another day off or a lame excuse to be paid double time
did anyone say thank you to a veteran/serviceman/woman??

and as the line of old grizzled veterans diminish yearly, does anyone remember those that participated in the korean conflict or the vietnam war or dessert storm?
or even those that picked up arms for us during peace time?

holiday or not does not mean a hoot to any of these people other than if we show them some respect and a quiet thank you

*stands down from soapbox*

Far too often these special days become nothing more than an extra day off instead of what they were intended for, days to remember the sacrifices that people made for us. We need to start remembering these people, and teaching our kids that these days are to honor people, not to save 25% at the mall.

Bingo.

Secondly, why should it be? Should your thankfulness be relegated to ONE day?
