Actually, it's not powerlifting, it's olympic lifting. Two different sports.

And technically, neither powerlifting, olympic lifting, nor bodybuilding are about being healthy. They are about achieving victory over an opponent. That's the difference between competitive sport and recreation.

bodybuilding is about being healthy. i do not compete or use drugs. instead i prefer to be shredded and look healthy with alot of muscle naturally.

i bodybuild to look good be healthy and live longer not to beat someone at it.

that man looks like a slob

i dont see why elite has to edit my posts? arent we allowed free expression without bashing others?

this guy was the first man to clean and jerk over 500 pds. i have read somewhere that he could run the 100 meters in 11 seconds and had a vertical leap of 34 inches. he may not have the aesthetics but how many healthy bodybuilders can do that?

elite sports is about winning competitions, not necessarily about doing whatever is healthiest.

However, I think that it's been found that carrying quite a bit of fat is not as unhealthy as you might think IF you are carrying that fat as a result of putting on serious amounts of muscle, and doing serious amounts of training.

I'd imagine Mr Alexeyev was a pretty healthy individual, overall.

SHW lifters don't bother cutting as they don't want to lose even 1/4gram of strength. Even if they don't look so good. Plenty of time to cut and look good when you retire from world-class competitive lifting.

And you buy Men's Health for the articles? right?

when are people going to realize that strength athletes are not there to look pretty. I don't bash jay Cutler b/c he is a terrible athlete do I?

dont you think it would be beneficial if he lost 50 pounds of that dead weight he is carrying???

other than that its amazing what he can do with that 500 plus pounds. if i saw someone like that on the street i dont think i could beleive he could deadlift 300 pounds

"Besides, speaking about the physical makeup of heavyweights, some experts feel that the ability to get high scores should be combined with the development of a trim figure. I have departed from this quite a bit. What is the weakest part of a person's constitution? You don't know? In my opinion, the part of the spine at the waist. And I constantly reinforce it by growing a 'corset' with my muscles. Yes, we superheavyweights are not too pretty to look at, but our body makeup is expedient for picking up record barbells."

"I'll have time to work on my figure when I retire from weightlifting," Vasili said smiling. "For the moment, I do and will continue to do only that which makes me stronger. I notice some talented athletes spend more time building their muscles for the sake of form and that this muscular development impedes their abilitv to lift maximum weights. They aren't too concerned with their ability to defend the honor of Soviet sports abroad. What is the sense of their beautiful figures?!"

ummmm double standards or what?

you are bashing me.....and my fellow super heavy athletes.

how about this "why dont you grease yourself up, and wear swimmers 13 sizes to small so you can pose for other men"

not very constructive is it?

you need to respect other sports

brother, i came from bodybuilding and still plan on competing again one day. but for now i have hung up my posing trunks for log and some big weights. i train strong man and powerlifting, and oly lifting. so i dont care how toned i am.

but let me tell you something, bodybuilding is for those who compete. if you dont compete, your not a bodybuilder, your just a guy lifting weights. if you have no chosen sport THAT YOU COMPETE IN............ then your just lifting weights. dont say your a bodybuilder unless you step on stage.

MR SEXY WUSS......that is the king of kings in the heavt wieght divison show some respect.....u are a FUCKING NO BODY......how many gold medals do u have? ZERO

is it just me or does Vasili have "small" legs, compaired to the current Olympic lifters?

yea. Definately noticeable. Put Alexyev next to Redding and Redding looked far more imposing, yet Alexyev won in competition.

don't forget Redding was 5'8" 350+lbs, while Vasily was about 6'1" 350 I think.

the height makes a difference :)

I read an interesting article about that. Many people considered Serge to be the stronger of the two lifters, but Vasiliy always beat him.

Alexeyev said this was due to the fact that Redding's training was all planned for him by other people, and Redding just blindly followed it. Vasiliy, on the other hand, was basically in charge of his own training. He felt that this gave him some sort of mental edge in competition, because he had gained more of an understanding of the lifting.

Something like that. Made sense to me.

he has a pretty big vertical jump. Mel Siff said he has seen him jump onto a gym horse landing on his knees.
