Van Halen

On top of kicking ass on strings, Eddie also does OK on KBoards..
Yea, I'd like to see them do something with Diamond Dave again...

Playing Right now...
"I'll Wait" ... a little known classic tune with eddie on keyb and one fine rip in the middle.

Eddie Van Halen is fantastic, but as a band I'm not particularly impressed.

"Hot for teacher" has some cool bass drum action though.

That is a good one. But my favorite is DOA.

Is DOA the Jello Biafra band?

Van Halen is the shit!!! I still have my F.U.C.K. t-shirt from that tour from like 12 years ago!!!

Van Halen still gets me fired up!!!

I heard GNR are back in the studio.....

Cleaning it... ;)

Eruption, Women and Children, Ice Cream Man.... the list is LONG.

Question, and dont get mad, Is Diamond Dave smokin' pole?

Yes. agreed.

I like the rawness of the first album. Most of the tunes were recorded live in the studio, right down to the controlled feedback at the end of the songs. If you listen to Atomic Punk; when Eddie takes a solo, the only background is the bass guitar, and drums—no overdubbed rhythm guitar. And it still sounds full. Really shows what an awesome band they were.

Kind of like the late 70's with RUSH, the way they did live shows
just the 3 of them working the pedals and such as they played..

Saw rush about a dozen times in concert. Did you read that nightmare that Alex is going through?

Musicians and the law don't seem to mix well. Michael Jackson's facing pedophile claims, Meat Puppets bassist Cris Kirkwood faces assault with a deadly weapon charges, White Stripes singer/guitarist Jack White's up on battery charges and now Rush guitarist Alex Lifeson may just join him.

Alex Zivojinovich, better known by his stage name Alex Lifeson, was arrested for what deputies described as drunken, violent behavior at the Naples Ritz-Carlton hotel.
Deputies said they used a stun gun on Zivojinovich, 50, who faces 6 charges that include aggravated battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting an officer with violence, and disorderly intoxication.

Also arrested were his 33-year-old son Justin Zivojinovich and wife Michelle Zivojinovich, 30.

Very disappointing, Rush is my favorite band and Lifeson is the last guy I'd expect to see this kind of behavior from.

I am not sure what you are talking about? The way I understand it he is just a bum that gets kicked out of town by the cops.

no arguement here. hot for teacher was the only good song that I remember. Panama wasn't too bad.

That's true. I do like Panama.

Hot for Teacher was ok, but got old fast.

HEY!

Don't make me break out the Greatest Hits for you again!

that wouldn't prove much, yeah they had more hits on the chart with sammy, but they had so many fucking awesome songs with diamond dave that were never released as singles

and to the naysayers, 1984 is an awesome album

jump, panama, hot for teacher, top jimmy, drop dead legs, i'll wait

geez, so many fucking sweet songs

"Van Halen's 1984 is arguably the best and most defining rock release of the '80s." allmusic.com

Ummmmm.........hello......Michael Anthony......

...could have been replaced by any bassist, and wouldn't have affected Van Halen in the least.

Van Halen was Eddie and David Lee Roth. Either one of them left (One did) and the band died......

Hi Joker!!!:wavey:

I smoked my first doobie playing Van Halen, I had just put these speakers in my car (a 68 Mercury cougar Eliminator -Boss 302)
It was the first amplified speaker system on the market (MINDBLOWERS) that was the name of em. and thats just what they did..WOW! What a weekend!

Michael Anthony had some character in that band, not to mention he had some pretty damn good backup harmonies with DLR

and Alex is a pretty damn good drummer. there's a certain chemistry involved in bands which supercedes stage appeal or media attention

it would've been a different band with different musicians

plus michael anthony was the most jacked of them all :sqmellow:

As great of a drummer as he was, drums are in the rear
infortunately.. No slam on MA..

As for VH dying after dave left, I can't tell you how many times
I heard the band refered to as Van Haggar..
Adding another good lead guit and good vocalist was what made the band even better IMO.. As well as adding someone that could write..

No problem digging on Sammy. He was a FANTASTIC showman with non stop energy, a rock and roll preformer par excellance.

Now, as far as drums go, and writing for that matter, Neil has no equal.

Neil Pert.. damn !
Best solo's I have ever heard... like 15 min or more just hammering the skins..

That 'toss the stick 100 ft into the air, continue jaming with one then catch the other without looking without breaking time' thing was other-worldly.

They are going on a 30th aniv tour in 2004...

lol that was awesome. Artie kept on saying "what's the teacher gonna like like this year? WHOA!!!!"

1984 is a great album, but who would question that? not even worth discussing.

and did someone refer to michael anthony as the drummer?

Alex Lifespun looks like he has aged a bit and put on some weight.

What? He didn't take his 'Tour and smoke buddha for 30yrs and still look 18 pills'? What a neandrafuck.

RUSH fans, please continue this discussion here

VAN Haggar fans.. as you were..

Well this sux. What about the other Tres band for Texas don't they deserve their own thread too? I mean those guys have just as good music(if not better) than VH and rush plus they are from TEXAS and they are cool as s***!!!

I’ll give you that. Billy Gibbons is one of my all time favorite guitarists. He mastered the pinch harmonic like no one else.

He is one of my favorites too. I would like to see him and eddie and a guitar pick off. That would be cool.

I wonder why y lifter is ignoring my post about them getting their own thread?

I would argue that Zakk Wylde is more arguably the master in that realm.

Problem I have with ZZ is it seemed to me(and I am not a guitar player) that they only had a limited set of chords they would use over and over again..

Sounded good, just I only heard maybe a dozen or so diff chords
being used.. No real solo all over the frets stuff like eddie would do..
Is it just me ?

they have some good solos - but yes, they are pretty basic power chords.

ZZTop was using the equivalent of Pro Tools before it was so prevalent today - record one chord and then just repeat it on tape perfectly - like a drum machine (which they also use).

It is kind of like white trash techno.

I would imagine it must be really painful to play live.

I have an ear for music, just no time to learn the output on an instrument..
What you said makes sense as it seemed like the same thing was repeated over and over and over like a skynerd song

I disagree. Listen to some of Billy's solos. I mean they go all over the place. And as far as the power cords all rock band use those for the rythym.

He just doesn't make the guitar SING, if you know what I mean.
All low end stuff down at the end on the neck.

I've never seen them twitch and bend and get that "gotta shit" look like some do..

gibbons is a good player no doubt, but he doesn't stand up to eddie

eddie has a fucking mastery of the guitar, just watch him play

he's smiling and having so much fun, and he makes it look so EASY. his hands are all over but it seems effortless, yet he still sounds good and pulls out some sweet melodies.

but to each his own

as a guitarist i hold eddie VH as one of my idols, because i don't yet have that kind of mastery where i can play everything i want to. but i can play zztop stuff.

I'll take Van Halen with Sammy rather than Diamond Dave.

Best solo by Eddie. Short and flashy solo from Jump.

Best VH album: F.U.C.K

Your're right he is a master of the guitar as far as sheer talent of the guitar. But as far the songs and the range of music ZZ top has it I think they are just a better band all together. I mean listen to their early stuff(fandango) and then go to eliminator they sound totally different. And their last album I didn't even know who they were the first time I heard the songs on the radio. Now that is a diverse band.

It’s 12 bar blues rock, Texas style. ZZ is/was a great boogie band, and Billy Gibbons is the absolute best at that style guitar playing. It’s a uniquely american style of guitar playing, which is why I enjoy it so much. But don’t listen to me, ask Jeff Beck who HE thinks is one the best guitarists ever. And JB is an out of this world guitar player.

One more comment about guitar playing before I pack it in. IMO, people often equate fretboard dexterity with guitar player ability, and are missing the big part of the musical picture.

A great guitar solo is both creative and memorable. Feel plays a HUGE part. Here is an example; remember the song Comfortably Numb, by Pink Floyd? Play that song in your head and I’ll bet you can whistle that guitar solo note for note. Slash’s Sweet Child O’ Mine… etc.

Not taking anything away from Eddie because he is truly one of the all time best players ever. I love his playing. Actually, if you were to judge a player by how many other players he influenced, then Eddie might win hands down or at least tie with Jimi Hendrix.

So getting back to Billy Gibbons. He plays purposely slow, but with more feel than almost any other player I’ve heard, and to me this is what makes him great. On the other hand Yngwie Malmsteen plays faster and will run circles around Eddie on the fretboard, BUT HE SUCKS.

right

actually i like some yngwie, but i agree that technical proficiency does not make you a great guitarist. there are a BUNCH of shredders out there who can play yngwie style stuff, but they fucking suck.

eddie VH had some great riffs, great melodies in his solos. he had a mix of performance flash with great musicianship
