Vaccination question..

Have any of you guys been vaccinated for Hepatitis A, rabies, or tetnus shots?

Are there any major reasons not to get them?

Strange queston I know...I've only had tetnus and clueless about it.

Thanx.. :)

i think your supposed to get a tetanus shot every 10years or so
but i dont think after you get out of school or whatever that you HAVE to.....until you get a big rusty nail stuck in your foot
and the hepatitis A shot.....i get that confused with the B and C
and rabies? you dont get those till u get rabies and i think they give you the shot in your stomach

Yes, I got this and an array of other shots (japanese encephalitis, etc) before traveling to India and China.

As far as I know the hep series takes a few months to complete. You get it now and then 6 months later. Truthfully, I don't recall the exactness.

Most doctors tell you not to bother with the hep because it is not easily contracted in the states.

if you're going overseas or want to learn more, the CDC site www.cdc.gov is informative.

I don't think we get rabies vaccinations as humans. We get shots if we're in contact with a rabid animal. The hepatitis...hmmmm...don't know.

I didn't even think they had rabies vaccines for humans but someone told me today they did. I don't know anything about it.

I've gotten tetanus shots before -- hurts. Can't move my arm for 1/2 a day...

I've gotten innoculated with the series of rabies as well. Came into contact with a suspect stray cat. They don't give you the shot in the stomach anymore - it's in each arm + the hip. Then you have to go back every week or so for a period of time to get the full series then again in a year. The rabies shots weren't any big deal.

Oh wow....So is the vaccine not protecting you until after the series of shots are completed?

Thanks everyone for all the responses above by the way..

The tetanus will protect you for a number of years after the shot...

Rabies shots are a response to getting bit by a suspect animal. If you can capture the animal & bring it with you - you may not need the rabies innoculations as they'll test the animal for rabies 1st (this requires killing the suspect animal). You are protected for a few years once you get the rabies shots - but I forget for how long they told me....

I was told you should get if if you are going to be working in conditions are poor or wild animals. Thanx.

Rabies vacs are not a big deal unless working with animals. Tetanus, well, I wouldn't worry about it, because if you get a would, the hospital is going to hit you with it anyway. Hep B is a good one to get, but it is a three shot series.

I have had, in the last 2 years:

Hep B

Smallpox

Anthrax

Tetanus

Tularemia

Q-fever

Malaria

and a whole lot of exotic ones that you probably didn't know existed, unless you do hazmat / wmd mitigation work.
