After 12 years of jumping from helicopters for crappy pay, tomorrow will be my last day as a USCG Rescue Swimmer. Bittersweet, to say the least. Just thought I'd share... :)

It's scary bro. Especially since I would only have 8 more towards retirement. I'm just tired of the drama.
 
Walking away 12 years into a 20 year lifetime retirement is a big decision.

I'm sure it wasn't an easy one.

Thanks bro. Katrina fucked my head up a little. I lived in New Orleans (Marrero) for quite a long time. Being there and pulling so many people out of their homes really stuck with me. Here in LA, we're spoiled, I think. This Air Station does little more than fly around and "wave the flag" so that the local people feel that they're protected. I have no real mission here. There's no commercial fishing industry out here, to speak of. And there are few pleasure-boaters. My job consists of talking to local media about the fucking "Guardian" movie or answering questions about other units with real search-and-rescue. It sucks to know I'm not going to have a job that makes a difference anymore...but then again...I haven't had a job that made a difference since I transferred to Los Angeles. Hopefully, I'm able to regain that passion I once had. God...it felt so good to help people. Sorry to ramble so much.

What do former Resque Swimmers typically do in the civillian world?

Can you get a job as a civilian instructor in "A" School for the USCG?

Most of 'em retire an live normal lives, I guess. A-School doesn't have civilian instructors, and I have NO desire to live in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. (That's where A-School is...not Shreveport, LA like in "The Guardian.")

I wish. Sadly, I don't always keep the camera handy. From my experience, though, telling a woman that you jump out of helo's for a living is an automatic panty-dropper.
