When did you last visit Venice, in 1972? It's one of the most rapidly gentrifying places in America. The "hippie burnouts" have nearly all moved away, although we still get lots of homeless junkies and drunks and bums. Venice Beach, the biggest tourist attraction in California, is unfortunately a goldmine for panhandlers.

The average home price in Venice is now about half a million dollars -- for a small two bedroom, one bath house, mind you. Not too many hippies can afford those prices.

Sure, there's still some drug dealing in the "hood" -- the tiny but still fairly intense ghetto in the center of Venice -- but even that area is being gentrified, with Yuppies putting up million dollar houses on streets that ard not safe after dark.

As for the comparison to South Beach -- I hear SB is great, though I haven't been there. One difference may be that in Venice, there are at least *some* straight people remaining ...
