University Hazing

samoth

New member
Man, I should totally join a frat.

Below are thirty examples of the wide range of hazing incidents that have occurred at Cornell in recent years. All examples are based on reports to administrators, researchers, or educators. The term "new member" is used to designate the students joining the organization, regardless of the type of group. The identities of the groups are not included.

These incidents have led the university to take significant actions in regard to hazing. Fourteen organizations have been disbanded or undergone a membership review as a result of hazing violations in recent years. Some groups have returned to campus with revised initiation programs that exclude hazing.

1. Members sent instant messages to new members at various times of day and night ordering them to run errands for them.

2. Members required new members to eat only peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for one week.

3. Members required new members to stand in the dark and listen to the same song played repeatedly.

4. Members were required to memorize exorbitant amounts of information about the group and were verbally abused when they answered questions incorrectly on a quiz.

5. Members restricted new members' sleep by frequently waking them or requiring them to perform menial tasks or exercises in the middle of the night.

6. New members were given impossible tasks to perform in front of members who mocked them during the process.

7. Members pressured new members to simulate oral sex with cucumbers.

8. Members blindfolded new members and dropped them off several miles from campus and told them to find their way back.

9. New members were required to dress up to look like prostitutes or homeless people and parade around Collegetown.

10. Members pressured new members of the same sex to "make out" with each other.

11. Members required new members to perform a range of tasks such as cleaning the apartment of a friend.

12. Members required new members to perform extensive calisthenics, at times to the point of collapse.

13. Members mixed together a combination of unpalatable leftover food and required the new members to eat it.

14. Members verbally abused new members at meals by calling them derogatory names, not allowing them to speak, and requiring them to eat while standing in a corner.

15. Members told new members to bring bathing suits and magic markers to an event and falsely told them that sisters would circle the body fat on new members.

16. Members required new members to live with members for a week during which they were not allowed to communicate with anyone else and were required to wear multiple layers of clothing to class.

17. New members were seated together at a table in a completely dark room. The surface of the table was covered with ketchup, mustard and hot sauce. The new members were required to press their faces against the top of the table and remain in that position for four hours.

18. New members were required to memorize detailed information about the current members. They were interrogated in a dark room with a bright light shining in their faces. When new members answered incorrectly, current members threw ladles full of mustard and ketchup in their faces.

19. New members were required to drink water from a cleaned toilet, hold the water in their mouths, then crawl to a fireplace where they spit out the water to extinguish an imaginary fire.

20. Members were given condoms and falsely told that they would have to have sex with a farm animal.

21. Members made a new member lie down on a gravel road and do extensive push-ups on his knuckles that caused bleeding and left scars.

22. Members transported new members out of town where they were forced by members from another campus to endure rigorous calisthenics and humiliation.

23. On a cold night, members stripped their new members, restrained them to trees with duct tape, and sprayed them with water from a hose.

24. New members were required to steal private property as part of a scavenger hunt.

25. Members made new members lie down naked in a makeshift pool filled with six inches of ice water, beer, kitchen garbage, and urine. Other new members took turns standing on a stepladder above the pool and attempted to drop raw eggs into the mouth of the new member lying in the fluid.

26. Members sprayed water and beer on a tile basement floor and dragged naked new members around by their feet around them calling them "human squeegees".

27. Members kicked and punched new members while they did calisthenics, causing extensive bruising.

28. Members told new members that they would be branded as part of their initiation. After blindfolding the new members and placing them by a fire, members took branding irons immersed in ice water and pressed them against the new members' skin. Unable to distinguish cold from hot, new members thought they were being branded.

29. On a winter night, members pressured new members to consume large quantities of alcohol and then drove them to the shore of Cayuga Lake. Members threw sticks in the freezing water and told the intoxicated new members that if they wanted their bids, they had to dive in and retrieve the sticks. In one case, a new member who had earlier taken a prescription medication for an injury had a life-threatening reaction after entering the water and required transport to the emergency room.

30. New members were struck with objects leaving bruises and scars.

7. Members pressured new members to simulate oral sex with cucumbers.

10. Members pressured new members of the same sex to "make out" with each other.

what a gay organization

along with naked squeegees and shit wtf

20. Members were given condoms and falsely told that they would have to have sex with a farm animal.

ok, ok, as much as i hate frats, if i were in the room i would have died laughing if i heard that ;)

i dont know why anyone would join a frat and subject themselves to this sort of bullshit. id turn up and steal their girls - see if those mofos dont respect me after that ;)

I knew one where they chunked pledges off the point of a two story house, drunk as shit for party goers to make sport of.

The worst one I've heard yet is what happened to these guys I know.

They were blindfolded and told they'd have to do something very secret and important. They were left blindfolded for an hour. They were taken out of the room one by one. In the room they were taken to, they were ordered to kneel and put this guy's dick in their mouth. As it hit their lips, they were stopped and had the blindfold removed and shown it was a warm hotdog.

Not one refused doing the act. The guy that told me the story wondered why I looked at him funny until he realized he implicated himself...so much for secrecy

lmao!

20 and 28 are funny.

What kind of geek IM's a demand?

Numbers 4,5,6,11,12, & 14: I did that shit for 13 fucking weeks.

There were some black guys at stephen f. austin state university that actually did brand themselves on the shoulder. The scar was pushed out like a keloid and in the design of the brand. A guy in one of my business classes had one and showed it to me.

What exactly are the benefits of being in a fraternity?

I have yet to figure that out.

Social network is all I can think of, but I don't see who would want that kind of network

Black fraternities all over the country do this. Especially Omega Psi Phi.

I left my frat over a hazing incident, my good friend who was the President and my roommate made the poops run around the belltower in their underwear.

THe douchebag, expresident turns us in and Chris got stripped of Presidency, My roommate left before he got kicked out. Probation and shit, complete insanity, you cant have any fun anymore. Its out of control.
Being in a fraternity is so blown out of proportion, people have absolutely no clue what goes on in them.

:cow:

Nothing really, just a group of guys that share a big house. Certain rules in place to help with being in college and structure, you pay more for the housing but unreasonable.

You have a cook and food is prepared for you.
You have to keep up your grades, you have to go to study groups in your first year as a poop, poops have to clean, everyone goes through that. Poops have to do chores like wake up duty.

Really, its just an organized way to live together as a smally community. Every house has its own individuality, Im sure there have been ones that were complete assholes and did stupid things and then everyone thinks that is what a frat is like.

Really not at all, besides chow time you have a house meeting that everyone has to go to and then the leadership goes over issues or problems for the house. Not much more than that.

Some really cool advantages are that you instantly have a social network of friends in the Greek system, you go to really cool parties that they throw with each other, like a social with sororities so you meet the best looking girls on campus, you have dances with them, cruises. Just all sorts of fun stuff.
You also make life long friends b/c you have a tie with the people that you live with, its just a natural brotherhood thing. That transcends just who you lived with.
Older members come and stay at the frat anytime they want, hence they dont have to stay at a hotel that is sold out anyways for big football games. They get to party with the students, tell stories, shit like that. And the older members can help you out with a career and guidance.

Really, it has way more advantages than disadvantages, except now they have so many rules for them b/c of what a few idiot houses did that the fun isnt as great in them. Each house is completely different with its own set of humans in them, just the rules are similar to live by.

Hmm... interesting reply, thanks.

I still think I'd prefer a military life to the frat life, but that's just me.

I see why they have so many rules nowaday, honestly... lotsa shit goes down, at least recently. One frat house at my old university lost recognition because someone died from hazing two years ago.

Theres not really a frat life anymore than a dorm life, just slightly different with more social functions for a frat. 95% of the time you do things unrelated to the frat so its just a place to hang your hat, no different than any other living group that Ive been in. Far far different than a military life. There is very little regiment except some study groups for newbies and most skip them.
Plus you have older members with class notes and old tests and stuff to help study.
I understand some rules, but alot of them are solely enacted for frats. Mainly b/c of biased administrators that couldnt get into a frat. when they were in a undergrad.. Alot of sourgrapes on campuses about them.

People die in dorms and other places too, and sure, some houses are filled with morons but that is just the way all things happen in life. I mean something happens b/c of the rule of Darwin and everyone pays the price. THere was a girl that fell out a window at a frat b/c she was too drunk, her fault, and they passes the Heavey Law that said police could come in and search the Frat. for alcohol. Thats outrageous, thats where we live and to have cops by law able to come in and go through your stuff with no probable cause is crazy.
A girl a few years earlier did a drunk fall out of a window a few years before, nothing done then.
I dont know, it was a long time ago, just fun stuff for awhile, I left b/c of the hazing bullshit. I mean there are funny things and then there is tying people up and throwing them in the trunk. Its like a complete difference in what was done. Just a zero tolerance policy on hazing is ridiculous b/c they define hazing to meet just about whatever standard they want after it happens.

*snicker at blackout*

Yeah, but if something happens in a frat house, there's someone for the cops/university to blame!! And you know they damn well will nowadays. Like the university's gonna blame itself when a drunken kid falls out the dorm windows?
