Underhand and close grip lat pulldowns build width or thickness?

I found that close grip pulldowns helped my back width without the strain on my shoulders that wide grip pulldowns caused. The only time I tried underhand grip was after my shoulder surgery and then I wasn't using a lot of weight, so I don't have any first hand experience with them. The most important thing to me was making sure that I used good form in all the movements I did for my back.

I noticed my biggest improvement in my back with the following routine.

BB rows 4x6
close grip pulldowns 4x8-10
rack deads or regular deadlifts 4x6
T-bar rows 4x6
I would alternate db rows with seated cable rows every other workout.
 
i like close grip pulldowns and pull-ups, they really let me focus on my lats and squeeze them on every rep, widegrip also tweaks my shoulder.
