U.S. plans to develop new nuclear weapons
Washington (Reuters) Wednesday 6th April, 2005 (UPI)
The head of the U.S. nuclear weapons program this week asked Congress to approve funds to research a new nuclear warhead, the Washington Post reported.
Linton Brooks, head of the National Nuclear Safety Administration, said such a warhead could be deployed in fewer than 10 years without any nuclear testing.
There is a ban on nuclear testing to determine whether warheads remain reliable and effective. Most of that work is done through extensive computer modeling.
Brooks said most nuclear warheads in the U.S. stockpile have larger yields than are now needed and they have no ability to attack underground targets.
Today's stockpile may not be the stockpile you want to have 20 years from now, Brooks concluded.
He said newer warheads would be designed to be less sensitive to aging and would be easier to certify as safe and reliable.
