I feel ignorant. Just today I was enlightened to the fact that there are different kinds of oats. While I was rummaging through the grocery store, I noticed that Quaker Oats have both "QUICK OATS" and "OLD FASHIONED OATS." I have been eating these QUICK OATS for quite some time now. Could anyone tell me the difference between the two and whether one is superior to the other? And what are these "STEEL CUT OATS" that you folks on here often refer to?

I just discovered steel cut oats a couple weeks ago (thanks JKurz1!) and have been eating them almost daily a few hours before working out. I nuke em with water before bed so they're really hot, then seal em tight in a Ziploc container (not a bag lol) overnight and re-heat em in the morning with some sugar-free maple syrup...MMMMM!!!!! :chomp:

I should've mentioned that the reason I soak em overnight is because they don't absorb the water as quickly as regular oats, and if you tried eating them without soaking them long enough they would be rather chewy (I learned quickly)

While oats in general are a pretty slow digesting carbohydrate source, it is my understanding that steel cut oats are even more slowly digested than rolled oats.
