Two Herniated Disks

WalkingBeast

Just got the results back from my MRI. Doc says I got 2 herniated disks in my mid back. Says surgery is real risky and I might be breathing out of a tube if I get it done. Might puncture a lung. So he gave me the option of spinal injections with some steroid. Has anyone recovered from this type of thing and still able to lift heavy? Any suggestions? Doc said to basically stop lifting 2 months once I get the shots. He said it wont heal normally but it might heal somewhat better. Though its prone to come back again. Still havent got MRI's for my lower back either. Probabally wont bother, but that area pulls out easily. Doc said I got mild shlerosis in my lower spine. A bend. The main problem now is these herniations. All feedback greatly appreciated!

OUCH!!!

Sorry beast, the only back problem I have had was a lower back strain a couple weeks ago. That hurt bad enough that I never want to have any serious back injury.:(

Good luck.

i had my t5 shattered and was a cunt hair from paralysis, but i recovered and have done walkouts and partials with 800+ on my back. but discs are a bit different, i hope the best for you , Bro.

Responded to this exact question a couple months back for ya Brotha'..think it was in your journal.

I was diagnosed with chronic degenerative disc disease a couple of years back,..had herniated L1, L2, L3, T1, T2, T3, and L4 disc was torn open. And was left with very little fluid left in any of my discs. Basically I was fucked!! Doc (orthopedic surgeon) told me that if it weren't a degenerative disc disease that he'd have me on the table and suggested the steroid shots along with Physical Therapy.

DONT GET THE SHOTS!!! THEY SUCK!!! Had them twice, epideral with a series of 12 steroid shots up and down my spine. Back never hurt so bad!!

Today according to my Doc, I am his hero the way I haven't let this beat me!! Told me he tells all his back problem patients about my recovery....told him didn't wanna burst his bubble but for me the biggest changing factor was them dam shots!! Couldn't see sittin' back and gettin them for the rest of my life!!!

Get with a physical therapist who uses Swiss Ball's,..buy one or two for home and use it daily (sittin on one right now in front of my puter) and get your core in shape & lift smart!!

Today I'm in the best shape of my life and doing lifts that my Doc at first said to stay away from (Deads & Squats) . Still see him often for check-ups and all he says is, "Keep doing whatever it is yer doing"

For me the Swiss Ball and getting my core in great shape was and still is everything!!! As a wrestler since I was a kid and coach for many years I always thought I had great core strength and stability,..until my Physical Therapist humbled me with a Swiss Ball!!

As far as lifting heavy goes,..it'll come back to ya!! Remember I tried KILLIN a 500lb Deadlift a few months back and did set a new PR for myself at 450...It'll come back to ya!!

Bands worked well for me as well!! When I first got back into the gym and got my core into shape I went on Westside for quite awhile...helped a ton!

Hey JohnnyCoho did you have the sciatic pain going down the legs? Just wondering but that is an amazing recovery, karma for you bro.

Yeah, had constant pain in my glutes and down the back side of my right leg...Went right down hams, back of knee and felt sometimes in my foot, Tried living with it for awhile, with a slight limp when pain was bad.
What finally took me to the Doc was a day my wife and I were walkin' around Costco and my toes got cold and went numb and could barely walk outta the building the pain was so bad. Wife rushed me to the Doctor and went straight from X-Rays from our family physician to an Orthopedic Surgeon and an MRI.

How's yer back treatin' ya InTraining? Didn't we PM about yer back and Swiss Ball work this past summer?

Thats fucking awesome brother!! Thats some inspiration! I didnt even have the expectation of ever deadlifting again, but Id like to be able to bench heavy again, and lift heavy on most other movements. The swiss ball sounds good also. If I did get the shots Id be knocked out for the procedure apparently. So Id only feel the after effects of them. Id keep going back for more if that would allow me to lift like before. I may not have the luxury of a physical therapist, but if not Im sure I can do some core strengthening exercises if my back doesnt get worse in the process. Reading this is a great inspiration and gives me some more hope in KILLING THIS SHIT!! Dont bother to respond to this though, since weve talked through PM. No sense typing it out twice. TRAIN OR FUCKIN DIE!!

i was so desperate to lift when i was out, i made a bunch of homemade equipment out of bands and springs. they said not to lift weight, but nothing about tension. i just made things hard enuff so that i'd get a good pump, with no more than 10-15 reps. i just didn't want to lose any weight at all.

ThanX alot for the kind words brother!! Sometimes it feels that way! Cant go by feel though, Im determined to find a way around this shit! Just wish I had a clear answer I could work with. One thing I got from Johnny is to strengthen the core. I plan on doing that the moment Im able. The process of getting back in shape will be a bitch, but Ill be glad to undertake that part of the journey if my back is feeling decent. Ill use some M1T, for a brief 2 week cycle to help speed some of the results. That could be a while though, and in the meantime I get to watch myself deteriorate. haha Already lost a good deal of size and strength Im sure. Arms are down to 18.25, legs down to 25". Weighing in at 187. In another 2 months without training Ill be unrecognizable! haha Eating has been shitty too since it almost seems pointless without the training. This will drive me though! The fire burns! ThanX again!!

P.S. I likely screwed my back deadlifting like a maniac. 5-8 hour back sessions that were mostly deadlifts and beast lifts. The beast lift probabally fucked up my back the most. I would deadlift with the bar behind my legs where Id be leaning back with 730lbs when lifting off the rack. I managed to fuck up my lower back last december, could barely get out of bed. Then 6 days later I maxed on bench and tore something in my upper back. Its very difficult for me to ever back down. After those 2 consecutive injuries in one week I took some time off though. And trained minimally (aside from heavy arm work the second month) for 2 months. I managed to increase my arms a 1/4 inch even though everything else shrunk to shit. That took 6-7 months to come back stronger. I kept lifting heavy ignoring pain and in the process probabally fucked up the disks good. I may have herniated them both from bench pressing and inclines. But Im sure it was the combination of things. I dont even know how many times Ive injured myself in the last 14 months. These disk injuries are different then my last injury though. The other injuries I didnt feel much in my spine. All my back muscles and tendons felt torn up though. I wouldve been better off without deads in my routine. The heavy weights became an addiction. Was fun while it lasted!

Yea I get that in both legs myself. I had some trouble walking a few days. haha Went away though. But pain shoots everywhere. Even into my thumbs. Sometimes when I sneeze pain shoots from my rear delts into my elbows, wrists and fingers. No idea what that is.

Funny you say that. My uncle has a crossbow machine. I was fucking around with it for a long time, pumping everything up. I got a nice pump even though it was light. Had to strangle the fuck out of that shit to get a pump. Ended up irritating my back though too. I will probabally fuck around with it some more, so I can do something. Keeping my eating up would help. I need to keep fucking eating. Just havent been motivated to force feed like before.

man, i was one a fried fish kick for like a month. lots of eggs and peanut butter, too.
