Tuberculosis?

I was required to get a TB test today as part of a job physical. On the pre-test questionnaire, I was asked if I were currently taking steroids. And if so, I shouldn't take the TB test. WTF? Can anyone explain this to me? Please don't say, "maybe the steroids mess with the results..." I want a clinical explaination!!!

Steroids can affect the test results. These can be corticosteroids, prednisone, and possibly sex steroids (unlikely to my knowledge). I think it is considered a risk factor for false negatives since steroids can be used to treat certain forms of TB. Also, topical steroids on the skin can really throw off test results too.

Yeah, it actually was. The questionnaire specified all types.

When I did a TB skin test a decade or so ago, they only asked about corticosteroids and prednisone related steroids (including topical steroids). To my knowledge testosterone is not a treatment for TB in any form to deter a test result for TB.

Yeah I got the TB, not an active infection but I picked it up working in a kitchen with some guy who had an active infection in HS. I test positive but no symptoms.

Doc says I will probably come down with an infection when I get old and my immune system weakens.

I'll never forget how I got Tuberculosis. It was the spring of 1872, the long winter had been hard on all of us. Pa had just come in from the fields after having to put one of our oxen down...

Honestly, who gets TB in 2008?

Kinda racist comment bro! Actually its on the rise again!
Certain genetic groups are more prone to catching it than others, so I guess you could say the disease is racist.

Mexicans are not a race, saying Hispanics spread TB is racist.

And FYI, its a common fact that is where TB is spreading from -

I am aware that mexicans are not a race. But a racist comment could be made about mexicans...many americans automatically think all brown folk are mexicans. I stand corrected. Yes I can see a poor country with poor medical care and their people hopping the border without being checked out like they are if they come thru legally bringing all kinds of stuff across.

That is interesting....I used to be tested because I worked in the jail...I don't think I ever read that....

TB is still from a mycobacterium and does very well living in humid conditions where there is poverty and lack of cleanliness. At one time the Ohio River Valley and southern areas of the Mississippi River were known to have high prevalances of TB, while during the 80's and 90's Yugoslavia had very high instances of TB. It can appear anywhere, but tends to have higher number of occurrences in certain conditions. Remember the guy a half year or so ago who was from Colorado (I think that is where he might have been from) got onto a plane to go on a honeymoon and they found out later he had TB? They used to burn down houses of TB patients back in the day.
