triceps and reverse grip benching

i was just discussing these with wnt2bBeast. For those of you who do close grips, try reverse grip benching sometime. your hands should be about shoulder width apart and you hold the bar the opposite way that you usually do.
have someone hand it off to you (or you'll be passing the bar across your face with very little holding it other than thumbs and fingertips), bring it down to your upper abs, then straight up again.
go light your first time- they will feel awkward, and have a spotter. i find that when i reach failure on reverse grip, i really can't grind out the last rep and need help.

I use to love doing them (heavy), but it's been quite some time. Ive been killing close grip for quite sometime now, maybe i shall throw them back into the mix every couple of months.

hey sugar i tried them after CG today..of course no one in the gym so i only did 135 for 2 sets of 15..they felts pretty good..i hit delts before tris and it seemed to irritate my right front delt? i almost never have any shoulder pain when pressing..just the occasional soreness..i think i may add them when i hit a plateau on CG

well good! i'm glad you liked them. it took me a few times to get used to them, but thats probably true of any new free weight movement.
for my regular bench, i bring the bar down to chest level instead of upper abs, so when i do reverse grip, it feels like i'm benching in a funny kind of curve but they work!

i would imagine youd have problems bringing the bar to your upper abs..youve got some boulders n the way of the bar :p

does this work the bis more than the tris? if you let the weight drift past your elbows the tris will have to let the biceps take over the load. ive been wanting to try these, but i can never find a spotter when i need one.

all tris my friend :artist:

since I bench to my abs anyways, I dont see the need to rotate my wrists. Wrist rotation wont affect my tricep recruitment any more or less. But for those who bench to their chest, its an effective way to learn how to bench to the abs. it teaches you the groove and how to tuck your elbows.

I used to do dips and some close-grip benches, but now those two movements give my elbows alot of pain. I figure thats not a good thing. I tried reverse grip bench a while ago, with light weight, and felt like my biceps were causing friction against my lats the whole time. Was awkward. I might give them a try again sometime though.

bring your grip out just a bit. i actually have that problem a little too- i started working out in underarmour shirts and its smooth.
