Training and Drinking

I was just wondering how many of you guys and girls drink. Also, if you do, how often? and how serious are you about training? and does it ever interfere with your program? I drink one night a week, I sort of have a built in day to drink before an off day from training, but I have had my fun with booze and I am seriously considering giving it up getting drunk all together.

drinking is just one of those things i will never give up.....ever...although I have sworn I would never drink again many many mornings...

in fact, I am hung over right now....but I plan on lifting sometime later today.

without drinking I would probably go insane....

I was thinking of giving up women though....

I'm hung over too right now, which prompted me to post this. Jerkbox, I don't know how you're working out hun over, bro. Does that hurt your workout? It would be a waste of time for me to go to the gym today. I want to get more serious than I have been, and see what I'm capable of, and drinking, even once a week, fucks me up bad. Plus, the whole doing stupid things that I would never normally do is getting old.

I haven't had a drinking night in quite some time. I will, on occasion, have a mixed cocktail from time to time... but rarely... I'd prefer to sip on a water or a diet coke while I'm out...

Unless I have a real reason to drink, I don't. :)

I take my training very seriously

I drink a beer evry couple of months

The last time I got drunk was more than a year ago

Drinking does more than just add calories...alcohol binds to receptors more effectively than anything else and stays binded for up to 72 hours. That is why I don't drink much, I don't have much time to waste.

haha...i'm with ya on the doin stupid things bit....

drinking fucks with my diet more than anything....

i try not to drink, but the shit just calls me or something....plus, attend any social function and it's bound to be involved....and I can't just be around it and not drink. one of life's few pleasures.

i am all about recovery though - vitamins, coffee, gatorade, lot's of water, hot shower, etc.

i wish I was into weed....that shit makes me paranoid :alien:

someone needs to invent a better drug.

Drinking too much can definetely mess with your workouts.

I never drink just to drink. If I am out I'll have maybe maybe 2 long islands and that takes the edge off without having any negative effects. I'll do this maybe 3 times a year.

Also, if you don't drink regularly a couple of drinks is plenty.

I haven't been drunk for a few years now and don't plan to be again.

Good replies. It helps to see the real serious guys post up about not drinking, it really does motivate me to stop totally, and it also puts into perspective how truly stupid drinking just to get drunk is.

just remember next time you want to drink heavily, you can forget about gains for three days. that is enough of a deterrant for me

Yeah, Iron Lion, when you look at it that way, it is one hell of a deterrant. 3 useless days where you can't make any training progress just isn't worth it, life's too short to waste time like that.

i drink occasionaly for funs at parties and shit. im still 17 so i need to have fun or ill go crazy. ill still seeing great gains even with drinking so until i really notice it having a negative affect on my lifting, ill continue to drink socially.

boozing-- Fri & Sat nights...run on Sat morning (sweats out the vodka) & lift on Sundays-- intensity is way down :(

I like working out, but no ones perfect.. LOL!

Mmmmm, beeeeer....

Yup, I drink beer. And other alcoholic beverages when the mood strikes me. Granted, like everything else: moderation is key. And as someone else mentioned, priorities.

Right now, my priority is a contest in two weeks; therefore my consumption has significantly decreased, but not the love (of beer):)

Interesting thread. The guy I lift with (Ruspa on here) has the BEST workouts ever after a weekend of serious drinking. It makes no sense to me at all and he has "tested" it many times. He will be stronger and more intense that Monday more then any other one if it was preceded by a weekend of drunkedness. I really don't understand it, and Im not joking the dude is considerably stronger the next week if he drank a lot as opposed to if he stayed in. Im guessing it must be the extra calories or something. I stay in and eat healthy and get some decent rest, he goes out and gets plastered and comes back and kicks my ass in a lot of the lifts. Not fair! :bawling: :D

Life is fundamentally unfair, and therefore universally fair in that it treats every being unfairly in some manner.

The best thing to do is find what path is best for you as an individual, and then go down it.

I really don't drink at all, so the fact that he drinks a lot and is strong after it doesnt bother me as much because it is not like Im giving up drinking in attempt to be stronger, bigger, etc. It is just an activity I never got into. Im more fascinated by his strength after a weekend of practically nothing but alcohol.

i must admit, i like to drink , must get it from my father and im irish too:).
but ill drink any day of the week im not lifting. and when i drink i like to get drunk, then again im young so gotta have just like Lee said.
used to smoke weed but dont really like it anymore, its fun sometimes but it maked me paranoind like a mofo.

I'm more of a smoker. I never drink unless I have to...but yeah I'm probably the only person whose ever said 'I'm never getting drunk again' in the morning and actually held on to it...but weed...man I never once complained about weed.

When I read about the evils of drinking, I give up reading...:lmao:

I don't recommend it. . .

1. estrogen levels are elevated
2. coordination and sense of balance is lost
3. dehydration
4. causes alterations in protein metabolism

contrary to what most people think. . .clean living is the only way the body will perform at 100 percent.

people say, hell I smoke pot and drink beer and I don't feel any negative affects. This is BS, it will affect performance in the long run and rob you of your true abilities.

I don't drink, and I am often one of the only members in the gym squatting over 400lbs on a late Friday night, while others are getting shit faced and they will wake up the next morning in misery and praying to the porcelaim god.

I wake up the next morning with a huge pleasant ache in the legs ready to load up protein and carbs into the body. Meanwhile, those people who were shitfaced are too nauseated to eat food and they fail to nourish themselves properly.

Now tell me who will make better gains?

what do you mean by this? (not an attack...im generally interested.....i was about to run a search on it)

I don't think someone who is 100% dedicated should do either. I do belive it is the lesser of the two evils. Alcohol is more disruptive at the receptor level, it is more hard on the liver, it is empty shitty calories, it fucks up insulin sensitivity, the list goes on.

Weed in moderation can be good from an appetite standpoint, it does not dehydrate you, it doesn't take as long to recover from, it doesn't elevate estrogen levels like was once thought, just a better all around 'stress reliever' than booze if you are training hard

Seriously, I don't know how I'd hit 4000 kcal/day if I didn't smoke every once in a while.

BTW, have there been any studies done on weed and its affect on skeletal muscle growth or hormone levels?

a beer belly and bitch tits can ruin your hard earned work :)

i had a beer belly and bitch tits before i even started drinking or lifting. i was naturally overweight. ive now lost a buncha weight, and now that im no longer dieting to lose weight i started drinking again and i havent noticed anymore fat gain then just normal bulking fat gain.

Drinking? Nooooooooooo.

Well on special occasions, but never get drunk anymore. Ended up in hospital once cause of drinking, once is enough for me.

Shit sk*! You sound like me!
I too ended up in A&E last year after a heavy one on booze.
Since then I've never been drunk. I have 1-2 drinks every 3-4 weeks.
Results:
1) Marked decrease in body fat.
2) Increased iintensity in the gym.
3) Better complexion.
4) Gains are easier.
5) More money in the wallet!!(ÂŁÂŁÂŁÂŁ or $$$$$ for u guys)!

Make mine a Cranberry juice.....

I love beer. I really do.

but I try really hard to avoid it. I drink a seltzer in the bar, so no one asks me if i need a drink.. plus it's fun to talk to wasted people..

you're my bhest friend int he whooole world.. I love you.. *hic*

or worse

hey, make a muschle.. I bet I can kick your ash..

:p

I try to stay away from it. My priorities with training lie higher than getting drunk. Drinking is also something I don't particularly enjoy too much either. I will not get drunk to the point I puke. Ever. Did it once ... horrible.

I had, believe it or not, accidentally drunk half a bottle of bacardi 151 and 2beers. Long story, but I had never intended to drink so much. :(

Another reason that turns me away from alcohol is my girlfriend. With the exception of last week, she used to drink everyday and many times to the point where she puked and passed out at home, not to mention driving drunk. Oh well, at least she is trying to stop and hasn't had any bit of alcohol for the 8th or 9th day today. :D

I drink on saturday night. Usually have about 6 beers and two shots. Just catch a nice buzz and smoke a few cigarettes. Life is about compromise. There is no one thing in my life that is more important than all other forms of pleasure. Lifting is close but still not everything.

Drinking sucks. For me anyway. I've been a bouncer at a bar for the last 2 yrs and during most of that time, drinking didn't do shit for me. Just in the last 7 mos did I pretty much all but quit working there and have had the best results in my life as for as PR's are concerned.

I haven't been trashed since last July. I still have a couple beers a week and end up smoking a couple of fucking cigarette's (another problem). Drinking does nothing but create problems, healthwise and homewise. That shit almost ruined my marriage last summer, among other things.
Put family and friends first. And if your friends do nothing but drink, find some new friends cuz the drunk kind can't do shit for ya.

Overall, IMO drinking has no real benefits. just my 2 cts.

I`m going to guess that he`s CARBO LOADING with the beer he`s drinking. I know they`re not the best but they`re still carbs. That might replenish him. ???

In another life, I used to drink almost every weekend up to about 20 Heinekens a night. the next morning (or afternoon) when I woke up I would always feel fuller and my muscles would look bigger. I did`nt know why then, but now I know it was from my shitty diet, I was starving myself and when I gorged on the beers I blew up.

anyway, I don`t think I could have worked out like your training partner after that though. lol

IMHO no one that drinks heavily should complain at all about not making gains. It is ridiculous to think you can drink all you want and be stronger for it. No one can period. The guys in special forces are almost always heavy drinkers, but the difference is that their performance is one of endurance which can be overidden by the mind. A strength athlete needs absolute performance and recovery...you just can't do that if you drink more than the occasional beer.

I kick ass. Get used to it. :D And stop revealing my training secrets.

I do that quite rarely too. It was graduation weekend for christ sake. If I do it a lot I get weak as hell. It barely drink these days as when I did my gains were not all that good. Don't make me look like the forum drunk, jerk.
