In this case, it is my opinion, the league has issued a very harsh punishment/suspension.

It should not be dealt with in the courts. This is hockey we are talking about, but I agree it was a cheap shot and the injury sustained by the victim was serious. If he hits with his stick then yes, the courts should step in but in this case it was a cheap shot not a crime.
