Today I Had to Euthanize Nitchske

Today I was forced to euthanize Nitchske due to a cancerous spleen tumor that metastasized and spread to his heart. It was a surprising turn of events due to the rapid onset of his condition. In a matter of days he went from appearing only slightly under the weather to collapsing this afternoon. I rushed him to the animal hospital where it was determined by x-ray he had an enlarged heart, it was a 10.5 on the scale and the largest they have ever seen is an 11. Otherwise, the blood work showed he was in perfect health. An echocardiogram determined it was fluid around the heart and a large tumor. The tumor was so aggressive that it likely wouldn't have been visible on the echocardiogram last week and he wouldn't survive the weekend. It was an easy decision to make as he had not suffered until the time of his collapse this afternoon. I was with him in his last moments because he was always concerned when I wasn't in sight, as many of you know. I want to thank the staff of the Holly Farms Animal Care Center for their competence, professionalism and compassion. Nitchske was a truly amazing dog, as all of you that have met him can attest, and I was honored to have him in my life for over thirteen years. I've never had the pleasure of living with a more loyal, intelligent, gentle or loving animal. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Heys Sweets got the email so sorry for your loss that dog was so dam sweet and cuddly so good natured and loveable.

Thanks everyone. It's shocking how quickly it happened but I prefer it over him suffering with a lingering death. It's good to know he felt 100% and was playing like a fiend with the 3-5 year old dogs on Monday.

that sucks man, losing a pet is one of the toughest things.

Two years ago, I had a pet go from running around to lying on the floor dying in a matter of days. Enlarged heart, congestive heart failure. I was thinking the dog had a cold and next thing I know he's dying.

That's really common in my breed (doberman). He's getting older now and I'm so afraid of when he goes.

Sorry bor, sounds like he had a good life. We had to put my chow to sleep that I had growing up for similar reasons. I cried more about that dog than any girl I ever dated and broke up with.

Wow Java, I'm so sorry for your loss. Sounds like he lived a great life and thought the world of you, his master.

rip good buddy

There was a 75% of something very bad and only 25% of something not bad, just fluid around the heart.

Yeah...I bet the heart was huge on the X-ray. Putting my dog to sleep was an easy decision because he was panting so hard he could not even lift his head.

Sorry for your loss. Hit up the shelters if you can and save another dog.

It was huge, 10.5 using their rib to heart ratio. The largest they had seen was an 11.

Maine coon cats have this problem. It's a congenital defect in some breeds. A simple heart infection turns into full congestive heart failure.

really sorry for your loss java =(

I hope your little pooch is running around some pretty field in doggy heaven..

at least that's what I like to think he's doing. =)

It was cancerous tumor on the heart and fluid around the heart that caused it to look so large on the x-ray. The tumor was huge in comparison to the heart. The EKG and blood tests were perfect. The amazing thing was when the vet said the type of tumor is so aggressive that he wouldn't have noticed it on an echocardiogram had it been a week earlier.

damn man, moving eulogy
i'll pour some out in nitchske's honour

I'm sorry to hear that. :rose: RIP Nitch.

Sorry to hear, bor... You have my condolences.

I went through something similar with my dog, but it was an aggressive thyroid tumor instead. My options were to put him down or let him suffocate to death. That was one of the hardest days of my life.

Just sounds like you were an awesome dog dad and were selfless enough to do the right think for your boy. I really feel for you bro.

The hardest thing I ever had to do. Put to peace 4 of my cats in 5 years. My heart still breaks when I think about it.
My heart goes out to you.......:-(

sorry to hear that man.. I had to do that last year when my dog got hit by a car, he was only 8 but would only suffer the rest of his life

I am so sorry for your loss...

It was really obvious how much you loved that dog. You had to do a very hard thing... the proper thing but no matter... still very heart breaking.

I need to re-charge my karma. I don't see myself adopting another in the foreseeable future. It's tough dealing with almost fourteen years of habit.

Java, I am sorry to hear it..It sucks when losing a pet, it sucks even more so when you have to make that type of decision!
Atleast he did not have to suffer for a long time and you were able to save him from a lot of pain and anguish..Such an adorable dog!
Sorry for your loss

Sorry to hear that, JG
All pets have to die one day and it's better if it is fast and painless (for them)

Why don't you want to look for another dog?

I and my family have had six dogs in our lives, Nitchske was special in so many ways. I feel like I lost a child. He was a brilliant dog in so many ways. I used to watch a friend of mines dog, Nitchske's girlfriend, she wouldn't let another male around her. I can't stand to have another dog in my life right now, I can't watch her.

Pets and (serious) girlfriends..... same story

After you lose one you feel devastated because it was THE one
You think you will not recover
But time goes and you realize that Nature abhors void
And soon enough you look for another one
You may not find one as good as the one you lost but it's better than nothing

I'm more torn up about Nitchske than my divorce or any break up I've had. I've gone on one date with a girl and had her call her friend on the cell,"Javaguru has the coolest dog ever."

Very sad and sorry to hear. Its funny how you look back over the years of your life and think of an animal that had been by your side through everything. It makes you think about who in your life could ever be so devoted unconditionally for so long, giving nothing but all their love.

I've had my cat for 18 years. She gets IV fluid every other day (for the past 4 years). It is sad to think about what you will do when the 'time' comes. You just know when they no longer have quality of life its time to let them go. My thoughts are with you because I have imagined the same thing many times over the past few years and know how hard it must have been. Take care...

I think it would have been harder with a long sickness. My Nitchske was devoted to me through everything, you rarely find devotion in people. I wish that I could have found a woman 1/10th as devoted as him, I would have killed for that.

There is someone out there for everyone and she's probably just around the corner walking her dog....

take care.

In my experience, if they own a dog they're generally good people. :)

True, whenever I get called a "dog" by a woman I take it as a compliment (although thats not the way they meant it), dogs are very loyal to their caretaker.

Well, somewhere near you is a dog that is about to be put to sleep because a shelter cannot find a new owner. Sometimes it's not as hard as you think.

Seriously, I dare you to drive over to your local shelter.

Don't do it! You'll want to take them all home! Its so sad :(

I know....one of my cats died, I went to drop off the left over food cans, and I ended up coming home with two. :worried:

damn rob, sorry to hear all that. Hope you can get another dog that will bring you just as much joy.
