I suggest that you pick up a book called Guide to Law Enforcement Careers by Donald B. Hutton and Anna Mydlarz. It explains everything you need to know about every law enforcement career.(college majors, salary, types of jobs, etc.)

Also, if you're interested in a career in the FBI, then pick up FBI Careers by Thomas H. Ackerman.

Both are great books!

That's a little hoaky isn't it?

AS long as you are experienced in life, have a good moral character, adn some sort of formal eductaion....there isn't anything stopping you from getting a badge.

Reality check please....

I can speak from good authority....WHAT A CROCK!

Law enforcement is the biggest "just us" club out there. "Moral character" is an utter grey area. In fact, people with too much integrity often don't get hired. Most places either use nepotism or political contacts to get hired and promoted. Many places put so much empasis on promoting minorities (regardless of ability to do the job), that being white actually keeps you down.

There's also ways to get blacklisted. One place decides they don't think you'd make a good cop, they can get the word out so nobody will hire you--regardless of what their reasoning is based on.

Oh, those books might be a nice read, but I bet they don't tell the real story of what it takes in many places to get hired.

"Connections" is the word that pops up quite often when you're trying to apply for a job in federal law enforcement agencies.

I highly doubt that every cop was hired because of who they knew. Yes, there are many affimative action compaigns to bring up the minority numbers, but that is slowly going the way of the dodo.

Becoming a cop in Canada is all about education and life experience.....very little to do with who you know as most police forces are now using an independent hiring agency so that they are not liable for negligent hring practices IE the RCMP.

I have no idea how things work in the US...i had assumed it was similar to Canada....guess not.
