Tips for long flights?

I expect this to get almost no response, as with my HK thread lol.

My travel to HK includes a 14 hour leg from chicago direct to HK on shitty united airlines. Originally I was with all nippon, but we had to switch me around.

I read recently that they are starting to roll out international wifi, but I doubt that will be in place for my flight, and they have crappy in-flight entertainment. I'm flying economy because my poor non profit can't afford better, and I requested window so I can sleep uninterrupted.

I'm mainly concerned about going batshit with claustrophobia, so I'm bringing benzos and sleeping pills. I can't sleep the whole time, though, as I'm getting in at 5:00PM HK time.

I have a tablet that is being lent to me filled with movies, and I'll have an article I'm writing for a scuba mag to keep me busy. I was told to buy compression socks to keep the tootsies (yes, I said tootsies, fuck you lol) from swelling. Any other general advice on how to keep my body from getting wrecked up? Things to do, things to avoid?

Ambian or valume....

Ambien is on the menu, for sure. Ideally I want to restart my clock while on the plane, not sure how well that will actually work out for me. I don't generally sleep much anyway, which I think works in my favor as far as jet lag goes.

join the mile high club

I'm not opposed to spontaneity, but as much as I'm flying right now, I don't need to get banned from any airlines. Plus, the only person I'd do that with isn't coming along, so that's off the table haha

my brother and his wife have been to australia a couple of times and for some reason, on those long flights, a party always seems to break out in the back of the plane...both times, in both directions, they wandered to the back of the plane and found a bunch of people from all over the world hanging out and drinking and bullshitting.

Due to late flight booking, I'm pretty close to the back anyway. This would be awesome if it happened. I've traveled a bit, but with layovers and such, I've never been on a plane in an economy seat for longer than 4 hours. I don't do "sitting still" very well lol.

I'm actually surprised it didn't take longer. That's a hell of a haul with two pretty lengthy stretches. Did you intend to stop in alaska?

I think my total travel time, layovers included, is like 19-20 hours.

Yes Alaska was planned. The shitty part was I had to drive to Boston from Maine. Then from the Minila (Philippines) took a little shitty flight to Zamboanga (Philippines) then then sat in a two hour meeting and took a long drive, then got on a boat to go somewhere else. I felt like a zombie when I got there.

Call the airline the day prior and ask if u can get an exit row seat b/c ur claustaphobic. You may have to check in early and ask. Also u may have pay an extra fee but u cant put a price on avoiding sittin in economy on 10+ hour flights.
I am flying back and forth from Houston to Newfoundland and I pop a few benadryls and have glass or three of wine. I make it thru about 30 min of a flick then magically we're landin. Even if u get in at odd time i'd still sleep and just repeat the process to go to bed that night.
How tall are u? Thats a huge factor...

Blech, I bet. I've got Sat evening and all day sunday to get my shit together before I have to start being coherent in meetings.

I occasionally overestimate how well I can handle certain situations and I've convinced myself the jet lag will be a minimal issue because I suck at sleep anyway, but I'm moderately prepared to get handed my ass by the whole process haha.

I was gonna say wine, good book, and good earplugs or earphones will chill music but looks like everyone is a bit more hardcore with suggestions than me.lol

The exit row worried me because I don't want to have to be getting up/waking up every time someone has to pee. But maybe that's a better trade off than feeling stuck in a corner. I might see if I can make that switch.

You might also be on target about just repeating the sleep aid that night. I hate the idea of sleeping that much, but it might save my sanity.

I'm 5'6", so leg room isn't a big problem. Obviously it still gets cramped, but nothing like what taller people have to deal with.

I remember when I took a 15 hour flight to the Phillipines.

I watched three movies in a row that they were showing and smoked in the back (they allowed smoking back then). I went to sleep and had a horrible dream that I was stuck on a plane. Then I woke up and thought I was living my nightmare.

benzos and sleeping pills should do the trick. why both though? seems like one or the other would be good enough

I won't take them both....the benzos were more with the idea of a very low dose to keep claustrophobia anxiety in check than sleeping. But it will be one or the other.

flying never really bothered me much. i had to fly from here to malaysia. that was a total of 30 hours total of flying and being in airports. Never want to relive that one. we flew out of LA and got into Hong Kong and it took 15 hours. Wind was bad and really slowed us down

good. we don't want to hear about how you OD'd on pills on the flight

No chance of that. I generally avoid benzos and ambien like the plague, even though I could make a legit case for either in regular use. It wouldn't take more than 5mg of ambien to knock me out for ten hours.

The galley at the back of the plane...great hangout where it's roomy enough to do some stretching and some leaning push-ups off the wall, calf raises, squats, ect to keep the blood flowing, stay limber, and prevent blood clots. And walk a lot up and down the aisles...get up every hour and a half or so for a stroll and stretch...this kept my body feeling great through a 13hr flight to South Korea.

1) you don't need meds. There is plenty of time to sleep on that flight
2) drink tons of water
3) strong bladder, window. Weak bladder, isle
4) don't talk to anyone!!!!!
5) no alcohol - just adds to the massive dehydration
6) buy the in- flight entertainment - not the time to be cheap
7) drink some more water
8) eat at Popey's in the airport. Yum yum
9) try the shark fin soup

I never had an answer for swelling feet. I was always in business - put my feet up, walked around; whatever, feet were always swolt. Especially the next day. Drink lots of water and get a massage.

i take xanax + bonine which completely knocks me the fuck out. you will be a groggy mess the rest of the day though

having an ipod helps tremendously as well

glad you're not overthinking it.

you'll be fine. the guy sitting next to you, however, is completely fucked.

i'm have a flying phobia

last time I flew I ate a drugstore, butt was sober once the jet engines fired up :worried:

I would go to the doc and tell him that you'll panic on a overseas work trip flight, but your job depends on it. Then ask him what can you take to have a smooth ride... then tell him you'll be making lots of these trips so give me refills. Maybe there's something new out there.

Then report back. thx.

Doubt it. I'm a quiet flier, keep to myself, smell nice.

You can tease about me over thinking it, but the claustrophobia is, IMO, a legit concern.
