Times square for New Years ???? NYC

My girlfriend loves going there to shop. We are only an hour plane ride, drive maybe 4 hours or so. She has stayed in the Westin, crown plaza, some others but those were the latest. It may be to busy then but was thinking a group of us could go for new scenery and people. ANyone been during that time ?????

i went like 4 years ago....it sucked balls. not only is it almost always fuckin 10 degrees on NYE but unless you are their like 5 hours early..you;ll wind up like me and my friends....4 blocks away and around a corner so we couldnt see shit...then you get packed in there and you cant leave even if you wanted to. NEVER AGAIN..i rather be shitfaced in a nice warm place watching it.

but then again..im a 5 min drive from times squar so maybe i just dont appreciate like an out of towner would.

People start lining up out there at 6am. My office just moved back down near Wall Street. I had to walk thru Times Square to get to and from work. Baracades and all are set up the night before. The police will not let you walk around. they square off each block now to control the crowds. so from 44th to 45th, or 45th and 46th you are boxed in....you can't just walk freely.

2yrs ago, I tried to do the Romantic Thing and take my wife down there. Was able to find a hotel room for $300+. The room was so small...that you had to walk sideways around both sides of the bed. I could change the channel on the TV with my big toe......because the TV were inches from the bed. I thought I was going to have a nice view of the city...but got stuck looking at a brick wall.

If you come to NY....I suggest finding a Party.....and not do Times Square....especially if you have your girlfriend.

Yep, and we all know what economy gets you in NYC. A good room on 42nd will at least run $500.00, maybe more.

I agree with the other post. Get yourself the cheapest room possible and just party. Though, you might want to look into the parties immediately after Thanksgiving.

wife and i went last year. she loved it i hated it. we got there ar noon and still got stuck 4 blockas away but we were right in front of the mtv studios, we saw regis in the window, and we were in direct view of the ball. but we stood there for 13 hours till they finally were able to let us out. never again. ever, ever, ever. i lived in new york for 18 years and there was a reason i never went to times square on new years. i only went because i loved my wife so much and it was one of her dreams to do it so i took her there. but i will never do it again. people were sleeping on the streets. we were packed in like sardines. i did get 2 b on tv though. they were walking around the croud with a camera doing interviews with out of towners. i was standing right next to him and got on camera. that was the only highlight of the night.

Its a tourist thing. My sister and brother have gone and both said the same thing "never again."

I don't like the frigid temperatures and I don't like crowds. I can watch Regis and the Ball dropping in my 75 degree apartment.

I went every year in the 1990s (starting as a 15 year old, buying 40 ouncers at the korean delis).

You could move more freely, drink alcohol, smoke pot (it was everywhere) or whatever.

Post 9/11, it has become tightly policed and controlled. I used to love it (I like crowds) but I've given up.

yea there is no drinking allowed now. but that doesnt mean you cant pre load a coke bottle with rum and coke. or put vodka in a water bottle. they dont check those.

There are 1000 parties around town. Definitely worth the money.


The last few months...secuirty around the city has tighten. I would expect even more restrictions for the New Year.
