SPANISH police have seized three tonnes of cocaine hidden in furniture imported from Venezuela, authorities said today.
The drugs were seized in recent months at the port of Barcelona in an operation only now made public.
Spain's police and tax agency began investigations after growing suspicious about furniture importers whose costs sometimes far exceeded the value of the imported goods.
In January, police seized 661kg of cocaine, hidden in false bottoms hollowed inside furniture, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.
This led police on to other suspects and in March they found 2736kg of cocaine and two guns hidden in another consignment of imported furniture.
Four Spanish citizens were arrested, the ministry said.
